Jerry Narron will speak at Wayne Hot Stove banquet

Cincinnati Reds manager Jerry Narron is the guest speaker for the inaugural Wayne County Hot Stove League Banquet, scheduled for Thursday at the Eastern Carolina Athletic Park.

Tickets remain available and can be purchased for $25.

"We're honored to have Jerry as our first speaker," said banquet organizer Roger May. "There is so much baseball tradition in Wayne County and we're using this banquet to promote it."

May hopes follow the tradition of other area Hot Stove Leagues such as Wilson, Greenville, Raleigh and Kinston. The former Spring Creek head coach has been involved with the Wilson Hot Stove League, which raises money for the N.C. Baseball Museum at Fleming Stadium.

Four awards will be presented during the evening's festivities:

* Clyde King Award -- the recipient will be a person who has demonstrated strong academic work in the classroom;

* Jerry Narron Award -- presented to a county person who has had a tremendous influence on the baseball scene;

* Doyle Whitfield Award -- presented to the area's top head coach from either Wayne County or surrounding counties;

* John Thomas Award -- presented to a volunteer coach who goes above and beyond to spend time with the Babe Ruth organization.

May said proceeds will assist baseball programs in Wayne County. The banquet begins at 6:30 p.m. and tickets can be obtained by telephoning either May (738-5319) or Deke Reinhart (580-1100).
