K-Tribe splits doubleheader with Potomac

KINSTON -- The Kinston Indians split a doubleheader with the Potomac Nationals on Wednesday night, winning the opener 12-4 and dropping nightcap 7-6 in eight innings at Grainger Stadium.

Game 1 started with a bang when Ryan Goleski hit a grand slam, capping off a six-run first for the Indians. Matt Whitney kept the good times going with a three-run homer in the fourth inning.

Jensen Lewis (6-2), a day after his 22nd birthday, won his fifth-straight start, giving up four hits and one earned run in five innings.

Game 2 was a 31/2 hour marathon. The Indians broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning when left fielder Jordan Brown hit a two-run homer to right field, scoring Brian Barton.

The Nationals, however, scored one in the sixth and pushed the game to extra innings in the top of the seventh when a Rog Bernadina sacrifice fly scored Douglas Vroman to tie the score at seven.

Potomac broke the tie in the top of the eight when Devin Ivany scored on a Marvin Lowrance RBI single.

Brett Campbell picked up the win for the Nationals.

Scott Roehl (2-2) took the loss for the Indians.

The K-Tribe is off today and returns to action in Frederick, Maryland at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Kinston lefty Chuck Lofgren will take the mound for the K-Tribe.
