WILSON -- Wayne Country Day's Ross Wilson captured the No. 1 singles title in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference tournament on May 12 at Greenfield School.

Wilson defeated Rocky Mount Academy's Zack Cyrus, 0-6, 6-1 (10-6) in the championship match.

The Chargers competed in five of the nine finals and finished in a second-place tie with Rocky Mount Academy and Kerr-Vance -- all finishing with six points each. Greenfield won the tourney with nine points.

WCDS will compete in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A tournament on Friday and Saturday at Barton College.

Correction

In Tuesday's Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoff match against Rocky Mount, it was incorrectly reported the Eastern Wayne No. 2 doubles combination of Alex Bryant and Drew Jackson lost 10-7 to the Gryphons' Samer Prasda and Alex Durham. Bryant-Jackson defeated Prasda-Durham by the same score of 10-7, changing the score of the match to Rocky Mount 5, Eastern Wayne 4.

Babe Ruth Majors

Eastern Wayne 9, Grantham 8 -- Eastern Wayne's Bonito Avila had two hits and picked up the win in three innings of relief work. Jacob Sasser posted a grand slam for Grantham (9-4), while Taylor Brock added two hits, including a home run.
