Clarke collects six kills;

Faith Christian triumphs in volleyball

Elizabeth Clarke delivered a team-high six kills and Faith Christian snapped a five-game skid in its 25-20, 25-27, 25-23, 21-25, 15-10 conquest of Bethel Christian-Kinston on Thursday evening.

Clarke added four digs for the Conquerors, now 1-5 overall.

"We are proud of the girls," said Faith Christian coach Jamie Conlon. "It was probably one of the best games we have played all year. We do still have a young team, but they finally showed everyone what they can do."

Freshman Alyssa Hill provoided four kills, seven digs and two service aces. Kaitlyn Floars, another freshman, contributed four kills and five digs.

Sophomore Heather Crumpler dished out 30 assists in the five-set marathon. Summer Honeycutt collected two blocks, two kills and one dig.

Faith Christian hopes to end its three-game skid in Class 2-A N.C. Christian Schools Association play at home today against Liberty Christian-Fayetteville.

Princeton claims

five-set thriller

PRINCETON -- Cynthia Peedin collected six kills and four blocks in Princeton's 24-26, 25-16, 25-15, 24-26, 15-12 victory over Ayden-Grifton in Carolina 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Stephanie Daughtry, Kaitlyn Haddock and Jenny Wallace each had five kills for the Bulldogs. Daughtry added seven digs, one block and two service aces. Haddock provided three aces, three digs, one block and two assists.

"I am so proud of the way our team played tonight," said Princeton coach Trudy Rast. "We were pumped up from the start and never gave up. We played as a team tonight and that helped us come up with the win."

Brittany Davis dished out nine assists to go along with four aces and eight digs. Brittany Rose handed out a team-high 10 assists with five digs and three aces.

Princeton (4-3, 2-2 CC) is the guest of unbeaten Rosewood next Tuesday afternoon.

Hawks capture

EPC 2-A victory

Helga Bryant recorded two blocks in Goldsboro's 25-8, 25-10, 25-8 loss against defending Eastern Plains 2-A champion North Lenoir on Thursday afternoon.

First-year Cougar coach Markita Raynor cited Brianna Wallace for spikes and assists; Tiffany Burden for serves; and Shaconda Johnson for assists.

Goldsboro (0-12, 0-4 EPC) entertains Wayne Country Day next Monday. Match time is 4 p.m.

Gators suffer

Carolina road loss

KENLY -- North Johnston rallied from a 2-1 deficit to turn back Spring Creek 25-21, 16-25, 17-25, 25-17, 15-11 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Tomeka Pride led the Gators with 11 kills. Libero Brooke Albertson collected 10 digs.

Courtney Oxendine and Brooke Boggan each served two aces.

Spring Creek needed four sets to deal Midway a 25-20, 25-11, 24-26, 25-6 loss in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon.

Oxendine and Margo Sauter each provided four kills.

Brittani Billups served six aces. Brogden added five, while Sauter contributed four.

Spring Creek (8-3, 1-3 CC) entertains archrival North Duplin next Tuesday afternoon.

Carr, Rebels

outlast Rosewood

CALYPSO -- Brittany Carr delivered the match-clinching kill in North Duplin's come-from-behind 26-28, 25-15, 25-22 victory over Rosewood in Carolina 1-A Conference action Thursday afternoon.

The Rebels stayed perfect overall (8-0) and in conference play (4-0) heading into next Tuesday's match at Spring Creek.

Carr finished with two kills and a match-high 11 aces. Kayla Myers and Sam Cates each contributed three kills and combined for five aces. Erica Lane served three aces.

Rosewood, meanwhile, suffered its seventh loss after taking the opening set in a match this season. The Eagles, the two-time defending conference champions, fell to 0-4 in the league and 2-9 overall.

Ashley Williams led Rosewood with four kills, three blocks and three digs. Roxie Phillips served eight aces to go with three assists. Paige Babb dished out three assists and had one kill.

Caroline Tart provided three kills, three digs and one ace.

The Eagles entertain archrival Princeton next Tuesday afternoon. Match time is 4:30 p.m.

Hunt defeats

Saints in ECC 3-A

DUDLEY -- Wilson Hunt collected 17 aces overall in a 25-19, 25-21 victory over Southern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

The Saints (3-5) suffered their first league loss in four outings. They continue play next Tuesday afternoon at Charles B. Aycock.

KENLY -- Kristin Smith collected a team-high four kills in Spring Creek's 25-11, 25-19 conquest of Carolina 1-A Conference opponent North Johnston on Thursday afternoon.

Tasha Whitfield, Ashley Barwick and Anna Potter each served two aces.

The Gators dropped a 25-15, 10-25, 25-17 on Wednesday afternoon against Super Six 1-A member Midway.

Whitfield provided 10 aces and six kills.

Spring Creek (6-3, 2-1 CC) plays host to North Duplin next Tuesday afternoon.

Ignot's goal

lifts Faith Christian

Freddy Ignot tallied the game-winning goal as Faith Christian turned back Bethel Christian-Kinston 3-2 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

Ignot's goal came off an assist from Jason Bone for the Crusaders, who evened their worksheet at 3-3.

Stephen Marshal collected two first-half goals off assists from Ignot and Bone.

Keep John Ziegler recorded 15 saves and shut out Bethel in the second half.

Faith Christian entertains Liberty Christian-Fayetteville in a N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A game this afternoon. Match time is 4 p.m.

Warriors knock

off archrival

Eastern Wayne swept the doubles matches and completed its regular-season sweep of archrival Southern Wayne with a 7-2 victory on the Wayne Community College courts Thursday afternoon.

The tandems of Ashley Smith-Brandi Butts, Lauren Bynum-Casie Musgrave and Mollie Musgrave-Burnette each prevailed by identical 8-4 scores.

Bynum, Butts, Mollie Musgrave and Nicole Fine each claimed a straight-set win in singles.

Second-seeded Tara Hirsch won in straight sets for the Saints. Teammate Katlyn Thornton, the No. 4 seed, lost the opening set in a 1-6, 6-0, 7-5 decision against Casie Musgrave.

Eastern Wayne travels to Wilson Hunt next Tuesday, while Southern Wayne (5-5, 1-4 ECC) is the guest of Wilson Beddingfield. Both matches are slated for 4 p.m. starts.

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock played consistently on every point and dumped Wilson Beddingfield 9-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (11-1, 6-0 ECC) extended their 27-year conference-match win streak to 288 and continue league play next Tuesday afternoon at Kinston.

"Today's match was a good win with consistent play throughout the lineup," said Aycock coach Luke Vail. "Our groundstrokes were sharp. I was especially pleased with our improved net play in doubles."

Raychel Batts, Carlyn Claiborne, Nicole Taylor, Laine Purcell, Lizzie Sodoma and Kristen Prosser each captured a straight-set singles win. Purcell, Sodoma and Prosser each posted a shutout.

EPC domination

BETHEL -- Greene Central started second-half play in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference with a dominating 9-0 performance against third-year member North Pitt on Thursday afternoon.

The Rams (14-1, 6-0 EPC) dropped just five games in singles and doubles play combined.

"I was extremely pleased with our play in doubles today," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "We are finally starting to get to the net more quickly, and we are doing a better job of putting away volleys."

The tandems of Meredith Rouse-Brittany Horton, Christi Murphy-Ashley Harrell and Michelle Jernigan-Elizabeth Cooper each posted an 8-0 win. Rouse-Horton and Murphy-Harrell remained unbeaten in nine outings. Cooper-Jernigan collected their team-leading 12th win in 13 tries.

The same six each claimed a straight-set singles victory.

Rachel Sasser, Ruthanne Hardy, Heather Phillips, Ashley Fillipeli, Haley Bright and Lauren Harris each picked up a straight-set singles victory. Sasser, Bright and Harris didn't lose a game on the Jaguars' courts.

Sasser-Hardy, Fillipeli-Madison Gray and Kristen Penuel-Jordan Hoffman each triumphed in doubles action.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Spring Creek's tandem of Ivey Best-Jessica Foley emerged victorious in their doubles match in the Gators' 5-4 victory over North Duplin in Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

The teams were tied at 4-4 after the Gators won No. 1 doubles with Stacy Smith-Kaitlin Murphy. The Rebels, a first-year program, triumphed at No. 2 with Brittany Coley-Elizabeth Lane.

Smith, Murphy and Jamison Mossberg each seized a singles win for Spring Creek.

Coley, Katie Swinson and Janna Best each prevailed in singles for the Rebels.

The Gators (2-5, 2-3 C/SS) travel to James Kenan next Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, North Duplin (1-5, 1-5) entertains Wallace-Rose Hill at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center at Mount Olive College.

GREENVILLE -- Eastern Wayne prevailed in two of three doubles matches, but host River Birch held on for a 5-4 win on Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors' No. 1 doubles of Lindsay Frederick-Elizabeth Borden triumphed 8-3. Teammates Kelsi Yates-Holland claimed a tough 8-6 win at the No. 3 slot.

Emily Northington and Minerva Rodriguez earned the Warriors' victories in singles play. Rodriguez claimed a 7-5 tiebreaker against Gabby Koury in their eight-game pro set.

Eastern Wayne returns to action Monday against Greene Central.
