JV football -- Saints' Dewitt tosses pair of TD passes

BAILEY -- Ren Dewitt threw a pair of touchdown passes in his quarterback debut and the Southern Wayne defense forced six turnovers in a 33-8, non-conference victory over Southern Nash.

Dewitt, filling in for an injured Tristan Bass, completed 6 of 9 passes for 129 yards with both touchdown strikes to Alex Aldridge. Aldridge's two receptions totaled 107 yards.

Kelvin Flow added two rushing touchdowns and finished with 45 yards. Eric Futrell and Silonte Thompson combined for 111 yards rushing.

Scott Holloman returned a fumble for the Saints' fifth touchdown.

Daquan Cozart led the Southern Wayne defense with six tackles. Aldridge and Holloman each provided six stops. Thompson and Matt Wise each collected five tackles.

Southern Wayne (4-1) takes next week off and returns to action Oct. 6 at archrival Eastern Wayne.

Wilmington Hoggard 21

Goldsboro High 12

Iveon Sprangle and Antwan Greenfield each scored a touchdown in Goldsboro's 21-12 non-conference loss against Wilmington J.T. Hoggard on Thursday evening.

The Vikings, of the Class 3-A/4-A Mideastern Conference, owned a 21-0 lead at halftime. Sprangle avoided the shutout with a 37-yard romp in the third quarter. Greenfield snagged a 3-yard pass from Dustin Uzzardo in the fourth.

Javaris Simmons emerged the Cougars' leading receiver with 77 yards on three catches.

Greenfield led the defense with eight tackles and three assists. Dan Bryant contributed seven stops and two assists. Tyquan Sprangle recorded seven tackles.

Goldsboro (0-5) is open next week and plays its first-ever Eastern Plains 2-A Conference game Oct. 6 at Tarboro High. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Viking Stadium.

Middle schools

Rosewood 30, Mount Olive 0 -- Eagles 2-0 and entertain Goldsboro next Thursday afternoon. Individual statistics were not available.

Greenwood 30, Goldsboro 22 -- Chris Barfield tallied the game-winning touchdown, a seven-yard run, in the fourth quarter for the T-Birds. Barfield finished the day with two touchdowns. Danny Smith added touchdown runs of 7 and 42 yards. Edward Muldrow emerged the defensive leader with three sacks. Greenwood (2-0) travels to Spring Creek next Thursday, while Goldsboro (1-1) goes to Rosewood.

Norwayne 36, Spring Creek 0 -- Tyheim Pitt and David Porter each scored two touchdowns for the Cobras, who earned their first win of the season. Shepard Whitfield added a touchdown. Ryan Godwin, Marcus Cobb, Antonio Dunston, Cody Tillman and Stevie Mitts led the defense to its first shutout. Norwayne (1-1) travels to Dillard next Thursday.

Brogden 28, Dillard 14 -- Lorenzo Alford and Jabari Dos Santos each scored two touchdowns for the unbeaten Rams. Alford collected 10 tackles on defense. Gary Woodard and Juan Segura each recorded eight stops. Brogden (2-0) visits Grantham next Thursday.

Eastern Wayne 48, Grantham 0 -- Will White and Kenyatta Bryant combined for 175 yards and four touchdowns for Eastern Wayne. Linwood Grantham added 78 yards and a touchdown, while Ryan Jones contributed a 32-yard touchdown run. Defensively, Ricky Bell recorded 10 tackles and two sacks. Rashawn Barnes returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown. Hassan Best and White each had five tackles and one interception. Eastern Wayne (2-0) travels to Mount Olive next Thursday afternoon.
