Trojan men put perfect record, No. 13 ranking on line Saturday

MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive College men's soccer team puts it No. 13 national ranking on the line Saturday as the Trojans travel to Hartsville, S.C., to take on Coker in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference action. Match time is 3:30 p.m.

Mount Olive (7-0-1 overall, 3-0-0 CVAC) is coming off an 8-0 victory over Pfeiffer Wednesday in a match that saw the Trojans score six goals in the final 13 minutes. Sophomore Woody Stilley recorded his first collegiate hat trick, scoring all three of his goals in a span of six minutes. Stilley has five goals in his last three matches.

Despite being held without a goal Wednesday for only the second time this season, senior Reid Clewis continues to rank among the conference leaders in goals with six. With three assists against Pfeiffer, sophomore Adam Caston joins junior Erik Small and sophomore Chris Varela among the conference assists leaders.

Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Roush continues to lead the CVAC with a 0.65 goals against average. Roush is credited with three of the Trojans' five shutouts this season.

Coker (2-4-0, 0-3-0) is coming off a 3-1 loss to Queens.

Along with its national ranking, Mount Olive is ranked No. 2 in the Southeast Region. Clayton State, ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 6 in the national poll, fell to nationally ninth-ranked Tusculum Wednesday.

The Trojans enter Saturday's match on an 11-match unbeaten streak, stretching back to last year's CVAC Tournament.

Women's soccer team

hopes to stay on track

The Mount Olive College women's soccer team got back on track earlier this week. This weekend, the Trojans hope to stay on track.

Mount Olive heads to Hartsville, S.C., Saturday as the Trojans take on Coker in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's soccer. Match time is 1 p.m.

Mount Olive (5-4-0 overall, 3-1-0 CVAC) is coming off a 3-0 win Wednesday over conference foe and regionally 10th-ranked Pfeiffer. Freshman goalkeeper Heather Ulep registered her first collegiate shutout and the Trojans snapped a two-match losing skid and scoreless streak.

Sophomore Gina Dos Santos added to her conference lead with her ninth goal of the season in the second half Wednesday. Freshman Lyndsay Brennan, who scored an overtime game-winner earlier this year against Chowan, broke the Trojans' scoreless streak with a goal Wednesday in the 24th minute.

Coker (4-4-0, 1-2-0) fell 6-1 at Queens Tuesday.

Mount Olive's win over Pfeiffer marked the Trojans' first-ever win over a regionally-ranked women's soccer team. Mount Olive has a 10-1-0 record in its last nine matches against CVAC opponents, including three wins in last year's CVAC Tournament.

Golf team

ties for 7th

Mick Moberg tied for the lowest round of the tournament with a 3-under-par 69 in the third round to help Mount Olive finish in a tie for seventh out of 16 teams at the Johnny Palmer/Old North State Golf Tournament this week at the Old North State Club in Badin, N.C. The Trojans finished with a 315-304-303--922 in the three-round tournament.

Moberg, who competed in last year's NCAA II Men's Golf Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional, tied for 17th out of 90 golfers with an 81-75-69--225. Moberg was one of only four golfers to break 70 during the tournament.

Chris Bitzenhofer tied for 41st with a 79-75-77--231, while Jonathan Greene tied for 53rd with a 79-77-78--234. Cameron Phillips tied for 64th (79-77-82--238) and Brandon Barfield tied for 67th (78-82-79--239).

Tournament host Pfeiffer won the tournament, shooting a tournament-best 281 in the final round. Ryan Heisey of UNC-Greensboro captured individual honors with a 72-70-70--212.

The Trojan men's and women's golf teams return to action Monday and Tuesday at the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Fall Invitational.

Volleyball team

concludes homestand

The Mount Olive College women's volleyball team concludes its six-match homestand with two matches this weekend - one against a team still looking for its first win and one against a team that's just a game behind the Trojans in the conference standings. As far as the Trojans are concerned, each match is equally crucial.

Mount Olive hopes to extend its six-match winning streak as the Trojans play host to Queens tonight at 6:30 p.m., then entertain Anderson Saturday at 2 p.m. in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference action at Kornegay Arena.

Mount Olive (7-2 overall, 5-0 CVAC) enters this weekend in sole possession of first place in the conference standings after a 3-0 victory over Barton Tuesday. Sophomore outside hitter Sam Mitchell led the Trojans with 13 kills, the final kill coming on match point.

Tuesday's match also marked the return of senior setter and two-time All-CVAC selection Sara Christie, who missed the first three matches of the homestand with a knee injury. Christie recorded 32 assists in her return.

Senior outside hitter Heidi Busch continues her quest to become the first-ever player in the CVAC and the 25th player in NCAA II history to reach 2,000 career kills. The two-time All-American has 1,988 kills and is 12 kills away from "HB2K."

Queens (0-10, 0-6) is coming off a 3-1 loss to Pfeiffer Wednesday. The Royals won game three by a score of 30-9.

Anderson (9-5, 4-1) had a chance to move into a first-place tie with Mount Olive, but fell at home to Limestone in five games Thursday.

After Saturday's contest, Mount Olive plays all of its matches on the road until Oct. 18 when the Trojans play host to Lees-McRae.

Prior to the start of tonight's match, the Trojans' six returning players will be presented with NCAA medallions for their participation in last year's NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship.
