MOC golfer Moberg places second

TARBORO - Mikael Moberg placed second out of 50 golfers as Mount Olive finished fifth out of eight teams at the Don Scalf Spring Invitational, hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Moberg shot a one-over-par 145 in the two-round tournament to finish three strokes out of first place. The tournament, which concluded Tuesday, was played at the Links at Cotton Valley in Tarboro.

Moberg, a freshman from Gaule, Sweden, was only one shot out of the lead after Monday's first round with a 73. He shot an even-par 72 in the second round Tuesday.

Mount Olive shot a team total of 298 on the second day, which tied for the second-lowest round two score. The Trojans finished with a two-round total of 617, finishing eight strokes behind fourth-place North Carolina Wesleyan.

Barton won the tournament with a 583.

Will Williams shot an 83-75-158 for the Trojans to tie for 29th, while Chris Bitzenhofer (79-80-159) and Brandon Barfield (84-75-159) tied at No. 33. Josh Harward finished in a tie at No. 40 with an 85-76-161.

The top four individual scores are calculated into the team score.

Three Mount Olive golfers competed individually and their scores were not included in the team total. Marcus Gamme carded a second-round 69 for the lowest single round of the tournament. Gamme, who shot a 78 in the first round, finished sixth with a 157.

Eric Royster placed 17th with a 78-74-152, while Brad Alford was among three Trojans to tie for 33rd with an 83-76-159.
