Broadie leads third-seeded WCDS women to win

Tiara Broadie pumped in a game-high 22 points as Wayne Country Day knocked off Greenfield 48-29 in quarterfinal-round play in the Classes 1-A/2-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference women's basketball tournament Tuesday evening.

The third-seeded Chargers (14-12) oppose second-seeded Kerr-Vance in the semifinals Friday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Rocky Mount Academy.

Christin Grubb complemented Broadie's effort with an 18-point outing. Laura Ziemer and Elle Dubberly provided six and two points, respectively.

Greenfield concluded the year 3-19.

Jaguars oust Rosewood

FARMVILLE -- Farmville Central played the game every way possible against visiting Rosewood in the Carolina 1-A Conference men's basketball tournament Tuesday night.

The Jaguars went inside and outside, slowed the tempo and raced up and down the hardwood before narrowly escaping the first round with a 56-49 win over the Eagles.

Farmville Central (16-6) led by as many as 13 points in the second half before Rosewood slowly closed the gap with some timely outside shooting. Kyle Bunn, who scored a game-high 23 points for the Eagles, knocked down his third 3-pointer with 2:36 remaining in the contest to cut the lead to 47-45.

But the Jaguars converted on 7-of-9 free-throw attempts over the final two minutes and eventually pulled away, advancing to face Ayden-Grifton in the second round.

"They stepped up and hit some big threes that kept them in the game," Farmville Central coach Larry Williford said. "Slowing the tempo down early affected us a little, but I thought we settled down more in the fourth quarter and started to attack the basket."

Rosewood elected to prolong each possession in an attempt to establish a proficient half-court offense from the opening tip, and the Jaguars were content with the grinding pace, dumping the ball off in the post to forward Javius Dixon. Dixon scored all 10 of his total points in the first half, and the Farmville Central defense held Rosewood to just five field goals before the break on its way to a 22-17 halftime lead.

Robinson finishes 7th in 500

CHAPEL HILL -- Eastern Wayne's Ashley Robinson finished seventh overall in the 500 freestyle at the N.C. High School Athletic Association swimming championships at Koury Natatorium on the University of North Carolina campus last weekend.

The Warrior women finished 28th out of 39 teams at the event.

Robinson also helped the 200 individual medley team take 12th, while Hina New took 18th in the 100 butterfly.

Rachael Stoneburner finished 23rd in the 200 freestyle and 24th in the 500 freestyle.

Eastern Wayne's Rob Cagle qualified as an individual and took 23rd in the state.

C.B. Aycock's Garrett Forrest took 13th in the 100 freestyle and 21st in the 50 freestyle. Forrest and the Aycock 200 freestyle relay team claimed 23rd.
