Warriors knock off Kinston

Eastern Wayne picked up two crucial doubles wins and dealt Kinston a 6-3 loss in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play Thursday afternoon at Wayne Community College.

The Warriors swept the Vikings for the first time in the league's four-year history and clinched fourth place outright at 8-6 in the ECC. They continue play next Thursday morning in the season-ending conference tournament at Herman Park.

The No. 2 doubles of Tricia Chatman-Lauren Bynum cruised past Kinston's Brittany Croom-Stuart Edwards 8-2. The No. 3 tandem of Ashley Smith-Morgan Pritchett posted the same score against Hope Hemby-Emily Broadway.

Chatman, Bynum, Smith and Ashley Miller each prevailed in singles for Eastern Wayne.

Kinston triumphed at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, and No. 1 doubles.

take ECC crown

WASHINGTON -- Charles B. Aycock clinched its fourth consecutive Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season championship -- and 26th straight overall -- with a 6-3 decision against Washington.

The Golden Falcons (17-2, 13-0) clinched the league's No. 1 seed and homecourt advantage for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs which begin Oct. 19. Aycock entertains the No. 3 Big Eight North representative.

"Washington really challenged us today and our players responded well," Golden Falcons coach Luke Vail said. "Laine Purcell won a big match for us at number six singles. Leslie Sasser, Carlyn Claiborne, Raychel Batts and Nicole Taylor all played exceptional tennis in doubles.

"We played intelligent tennis and put the ball away."

Purcell squeezed past Mary Page Peck 7-5, 6-1 to help the Golden Falcons take a 4-2 lead into doubles. Batts, Sasser and Claiborne each collected a straight-set singles victory.

Sasser-Claiborne and Batts-Taylor secured the Golden Falcons' title with strong performances in doubles.

Goldsboro High's Jessica Faison emerged the lone singles winner and then claimed a doubles win with Quionna Bryant in a 7-2, non-conference loss against James Kenan on Thursday afternoon at Herman Park.

The teams played eight-game pro sets.

Faison handed the Tigers' Christa Jones an 8-2 loss at No. 1 singles. Faison-Bryant then dealt Jones and doubles mate Brittany Crabtree an 8-3 setback at No. 1 doubles.

Crabtree, Allison Fonvielle, Beth Parrish, Megan Sanderlin and Lorry Chestnutt each picked up a singles win for James Kenan. Parrish-Fonvielle and Chetnutt-Sanderlin each triumphed in doubles.

Rosewood swept the singles and doubles en route to a 9-0 pounding of North Pitt in Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Kayce Brantham, Leah Smith, Sidney Worrell, Kourtney Humphrey, Missy Bailey and Erica Nichols each earned a singles win. Brantham and Worrell each recorded a shutout, while Bailey escaped Kornisha Dudley 9-7 at the No. 5 singles slot.

Brantham-Worrell, Smith-Humphrey and Bailey-Caitlyn Phelan each pulled out a doubles victory.

The teams played eight-game pro sets and return to action next Monday in the season-ending conference tournament at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central put the finishing touches on its 11th consecutive Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A regular-season title with a 9-0 sweep against Ayden-Grifton at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

The Rams (22-2) finished 16-0 against league opposition and continue play next Monday in their season-ending conference tournament. Quarterfinal-round action kicks off at 3:05 p.m.

Sarah Moore, Summer Chase, Holly Mace, Carolyn Turk, Carly Hart and Ashleigh Westbrook -- all seniors -- each collected a singles victory in the final regular-season home match of their careers. The six players have helped the Rams post a 98-12 record and make four consecutive appearances in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A dual-team playoffs.

Moore-Meredith Rouse claimed an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles.

The Chargers defaulted at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.

Cougars ... again

PINETOPS -- North Lenoir completed its regular-season sweep of SouthWest Edgecombe with a 7-2 victory at the Lee R. Hall Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon.

The Hawks (11-10) finished 10-6 against Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A Conference opposition. Meanwhile, the Cougars ended up 6-10 in league play and will miss the playoffs for just the second time in the last five seasons.

"Today was very bittersweet," said Hawks coach Courtney Harrell. "The last team match of my first coaching season proved to be a great one. We were so strong in singles today.

"Mary-Linton (Smith) showed a lot of fight coming back from a set down to win in three. I've seen these girls improve so much this season, and it's a shame it has to end."

Smith rallied to defeat the Cougars' Meghan Rhodes 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot. Teammates Morgan Worthington, Ruthanne Hardy, Rachel Sasser and Heather Phillips each seized a straight-set singles win.

Worthington-Smith and Debbie Vandiford-Julie Thomas each secured a doubles victory.

Nikki Taylor picked up the lone singles win for SouthWest.

The Cougars' No. 2 doubles of Brittany Laws-Erin Perry also won.

Tarboro suspended

Darkness suspended play at No. 3 doubles, and left Spring Creek and Tarboro deadlocked at 4-4 in a Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A battle at Walnut Creek on Thursday afternoon.

The teams will conclude the match either next Monday or Tuesday in the season-ending tournament at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex. Each team has already secured a berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs which begin Oct. 19.

Spring Creek's tandem of Sarah Bragg-Cynthia Breault built a 6-2 lead against the Vikings' Allison Thompson-Sarah Satterthwaite. The Tarboro duo rallied to within 7-5 when the sun finally faded and players had trouble seeing the ball.

"I think we played well against a team that beat North Lenoir very handily," Gators coach Robert Jones said. "Tarboro played a great match and Cynthia played a great tiebreaker to get us at three all.

"(Sarah) Warren and (Stacy) Smith looked real good. Sarah was very consistent from the baseline and Stacy was able to put some balls away at the net."

Breault dealt Miranda Spain a 7-5, 2-6, 7-4 loss at No. 6 singles.

Warren-Smith dominated the Vikings' Robin Ellis-Minta Dupree 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Warren and Smith also grabbed a singles win apiece.
