Logan shines as Chargers pick up win

Kevin Logan accounted for both goals as No. 1-ranked Wayne Country Day clipped Ridgecroft 2-1 in a Classes 1-A/2-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference match Thursday afternoon.

The Chargers (12-3-1) maintained first place in the CPIC at 5-1, while the visiting Rams (9-4-1) tumbled to 3-3 in the league.

"It was ugly, but we got a win," WCDS coach Michael Taylor said.

Logan needed just 30 seconds to put Wayne Country Day on the board. He threw the ball into play and Chris Reed headed it into the goal for the 1-0 lead.

Ridgecroft netted the equalizer in the 23rd minute and the score remained tied 1-1 until after halftime.

With a little more than 10 minutes remaining, Logan picked up a loose ball and dribbled through the Rams defense. He quickly tucked the ball away into the net and put the Chargers back in front 2-1.

The outcome remained in doubt until Ryan Ford recorded a huge save with less than 10 minutes remaining. A Ridgecroft player lofted a direct kick from about 20 yards out toward the upper right-hand corner of the goal.

Ford extended his body and knocked the ball away to help preserve the Chargers' second victory against the Rams this season.

"That was definitely a determining factor because as soon as they missed that shot, I think that knocked some wind out of them," Taylor said.

Ford recorded 11 saves.

Wayne Country Day played without Sam Steed, who broke his the radius bone in one of his arms Tuesday against Greenfield. Taylor said Taylor will not return until the team enters the state playoffs.

Taylor added that starting forward David Wilson sustained a severe ankle injury from a hard foul in the second half. Wilson's status is day-to-day and Taylor said he might miss Tuesday's regular-season home finale against Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.

"(But) we played with a lot of heart and they were dedicated to getting the win," Taylor said. "They stepped up to the challenge of filling Sam's shoes. It was a great win for us."
