MOC men fall at Wesleyan Classic
ROCKY MOUNT -- Mount Olive College's three-match winning streak in men's soccer came to an end Sunday as the Trojans fell to host North Carolina Wesleyan 3-2 in overtime in day two of the North Carolina Wesleyan Soccer Classic at Rocky Mount.
North Carolina Wesleyan scored the game-winner with four minutes left in the first overtime.
Mount Olive (3-1-0) rallied from a one-goal deficit as Bradley Carroll scored an unassisted goal with 17 seconds left in the first half to even the match at 1-1 going into halftime. North Carolina Wesleyan went ahead 2-1 early in the second half, but the Trojans rallied again as Reid Clewis notched his fifth goal of the season and tie the match 2-2. Cory Worrell recorded the assist on Clewis's goal.
Trojan goalkeeper Chris Roush made a save on a penalty kick in the 75th minute to preserve the tie and force overtime.
Mount Olive played most of the match a man down after two yellow cards in the first 10 minutes of the contest resulted in an ejection. Sunday's contest marked the Trojans' first overtime match of the season. Mount Olive played in eight overtime matches last year.
Mount Olive is off until Saturday when the Trojans head to Anderson, S.C., to take on Anderson in their Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference opener. Match time is 2 p.m.
Trojan women set record
in win over Converse
MOUNT OLIVE -- Melanie Cobb ecorded a hat trick, Heidi Philip tallied a school-record five assists and Mount Olive College set a school single-game scoring record as the host Trojans defeated Converse 9-1 in non-conference NCAA II women's soccer Sunday at Trojan Field.
The previous mark was seven goals, which the Trojans equaled in their season opener last week against North Greenville.
Philip scored Mount Olive's (2-1-0) first goal in third minute when she one-touched Jackie Jimenez's corner kick into the back of the net, then assisted on the Trojans' next three goals. Philip got credit for her third assist when her free kick caromed off the crossbar and Jimenez scored off the deflection. Cobb scored the first of her three goals in the 40th minute when she dribbled down the left end line and beat the keeper.
Converse (0-3-0) threatened late in the first half on a 30-yard shot attempt by Tracy Archenhold, but Trojan goalkeeper Heather Ressler deflected the ball out of bounds as Mount Olive led 5-0 at halftime.
Mount Olive scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Philip assisted on Cobb's goal in the 50th minute and Caitlyn Wright's goal in the 53rd minute. Cobb completed her hat trick and scored the Trojans' record-setting eighth goal in the 56th minute with a 20-yard shot from the top left of the box on an assist by Wright. Kristin Kinnaird completed the scoring with just under four minutes remaining in the match.
Converse spoiled the shutout when Sarah Updegrave scored on a breakaway in the 64th minute.
Cobb's hat trick is the fourth in Mount Olive women's soccer history and is already the Trojans' second of the season. Lauren Slattum recorded a hat trick against North Greenville.
Mount Olive has scored 16 goals in three matches this season and is one goal away from equaling last year's entire season total. Philip's assist total breaks the previous school record of two, set by several players.
She has six assists in three matches, one shy of matching the Mount Olive single-season assists record.
Ressler tallied five saves for the Trojans, while Converse goalkeeper Katie Heos recorded eight saves. Mount Olive outshot Converse 22-12.
Mount Olive returns to action Thursday as the Trojans head to Danville, Va., to take on Averett in a non-conference contest. Match time is 4 p.m.
