Warriors split matches at Greenfield tourney

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne split a pair of soccer games Saturday at the Greenfield School Tournament. The Warriors lost a 2-1 decision against Roanoke Rapids and won an 2-0 shutout over host Greenfield School.

The difference against Roanoke Rapids was an own-goal when a back pass went by the goalkeeper and into the net for a 1-0 Roanoke Rapids lead. Rob Cagle converted a penalty kick after Andrew Corley was fouled for a 1-1 draw in the 53rd minute.

Kevin Burnette got the game-winner on a 1-on-1 breakawayover the right side. He one-timed a shot past goalkeeper Stephen Stackhouse and into the upper right corner.

Against Greenfield, Corley scored on an assist by Joe Gossett on a long cross into the box, heading the goal past the keeper. Jin Lee collected the other goal on a sliding finish to the far post of a low cross from Eric Bourgeois.

"Every year, we try to start our campaign by playing the toughest cometition we can find," saiid Eastern Wayne coach Jorg Wagner. "This season is no different as Greenfield and Roanoke Rapids are ranked 10th and 3rd in their respective state coaches' polls."

The Warriors (2-2) start conference play Sept. 13 at South Central.
