Pelicans peck

MYRTLE BEACH, SC. -- Onil Joseph went 4-for-4 with one RBI and scored two runs to help the Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Kinston Indians 9-2 Sunday night. The Pelicans pounded out 13 hits against the Indians. Besides Joseph's 4-4 effort, Luis Hernandez went 3-5 with a double and two RBIs. Jonathan Schuerholz doubled and singled and drove in one run and Gregor Blanco had two singles and scored two runs. And Carlos Duran went 1-3 with two RBI's.

Myrtle Beach starter Paul Bush (W, 5-0) picked up the win after tossing five innings and allowing just one run on four hits. Kinston starter Nick Pesco (L, 1-2) was charged with the loss as the Pelicans chased him after just four innings of work. Pesco gave up six runs on seven hits in the losing effort.

The Pelicans have won two of the first three games in the four-game series against Kinston. The Pelicans will conclude their 2004 season against Kinston today at 12:05 p.m. at Coastal Federal Field.

Indians open playoffs on the road

The Kinston Indians will open the 2004 Mills Cup Championship playoffs with a road trip to Carolina League Southern Division second-half winner Winston-Salem Salem on Wednesday. The best-of-three series will them move back to Kinston's Grainger Stadium for the second game and third game, if necessary, on Thursday and Friday.

The Northern Division series will see first-half winner Potomac open its series in Wilmington, with the Blue Rocks hosting games two and three.

The best-of-five Mills Cup Championship series begins September 11th in the home city of the Southern Division series winner.
