Greene Central netters blank N. Lenoir

SNOW HILL -- Two-time eastern regional champion Greene Central throttled North Lenoir 9-0 in the Classes 1-A/2-A Carolina/Eastern Plains Conference opener for both teams Tuesday.

Andrew Hulbert, Brent Darden, Lin Hall, Chris Hardy, Dustin Grant and Brian Sugg each posted a straight-set win in singles.

Hulbert-Darden, Hall-Hardy and Grant-Sugg each prevailed in doubles.

Greene Central (1-0) plays host to Rocky Mount Senior High today at 4 p.m.

North Lenoir (0-1) continues league play Thursday at Farmville Central.

Smith gets lone

victory for Warriors

Eastern Wayne opened its 2004 tennis season with an 8-1, non-conference loss against New Bern on the Wayne Community College courts Monday afternoon.

Andrew Smith claimed the Warriors' lone singles victory. The fourth seed, Smith rallied past Chris Venters in three sets -- 6-4, 2-6, 7-4.

Eastern Wayne (0-1) opens its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference schedule at home Thursday against Washington. The match begins at 4 p.m.
