Pearsall has stout start for Saints

DUDLEY -- Chris Pearsall allowed five hits in a five-inning stint and drove in a run as Southern Wayne stopped Jacksonville 6-4 on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex baseball diamond Tuesday afternoon.

Pearsall, a senior right-hander, struck out six and walked one. The Cardinals scored three runs (two earned) while Pearsall was on the mound.

Sophomore Ashton Langston, a right-hander, earned the save with two innings of three-hit, two-strikeout relief. Jacksonville tallied one earned run.

The teams battled to a scoreless tie after 2 1/2 innings.

Southern Wayne erupted for four runs in its half of the third inning. Matt Graham led off with a walk and advanced to third on Nathan Fail's push-bunt single. Wayne Clemens plated Graham to make it 1-0.

Pearsall and Austin Hood each rapped an RBI single. Pearsall scored the inning's final run on David Combs' RBI groundout.

The Saints collected nine hits against Jacksonville starter Eric Silas. Silas went the distance, striking out seven and yielding six runs (five earned).

Fail, Clemens and Pearsall each had two hits for the Saints.

Southern Wayne (1-0) entertains D.H. Conley at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Becton leads

Eagles past Hobbton

Nick Becton delivered two hits and emerged the winning pitcher as Rosewood thumped Hobbton 12-1 in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon.

Officials halted the game after 4 1/2 innings due to the 10-run rule.

Micheal Render plated three runs and Thad Hill provided two RBI. Josh Allen and Kyle Bunn each batted in a run, and each finished the game with one hit.

Dustin Overman provided one hit.

The Eagles (1-0) entertain Charles B. Aycock at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Rams drop road

loss to Eagles

VANCEBORO -- Lemmie Barwick rapped a two-out, two-RBI, walk-off double as West Craven nipped Greene Central 2-1 in the season-opening game for both teams Tuesday.

The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first. Hunter Chase singled and moved up on a walk and a hit batsman. Barwick walked Jared Williamson, which forced home Chase.

The lead held until the seventh.

West Craven got Tyler Wayne on with a walk and with two outs, Timothy Creed singled. Barwick then followed with double down the line, driving in both runs.

"To have no varsity experience on the mound yesterday, I thought we played well," Greene Central coach Russell Brann said.

The Rams played without pitcher Jordy Davis, Aaron Layden and Jeremy Gregory.

West Craven (1-0) visits Havelock on Friday while Greene Central (0-1) opens its home schedule against Farmville Central.

Darkness stops

county scrimmage

Darkness halted a scrimmage contest between county foes Goldsboro High and Wayne Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles led 10-6 at that point.

Cedric McClary had two hits, including a double, for the Cougars.

Jordan Yelverton, Billy Smith and Josh Brannan each had two hits for the Eagles. Yelverton doubled twice. Smith and Andrew Bass each had a double.

Yelverton struck out nine in a four-inning stint. Brannan provided two innings of four-hit, four strike-out relief.

Curtis Mozingo and Norman pitched for Goldsboro.

The Cougars open their season Friday at home against Norlina Christian.

nips West Craven

SNOW HILL -- Tim McNair provided a two-run double in the sixth inning as Greene Central rallied past West Craven 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

McNair finished with two hits, while Josh Elmore and Will McLawhorn each had one.

Cory Skinner claimed the win on the mound.

Greene Central (1-0) is the guest of Farmville Central on Friday.
