Aycock's Jackson no-hits Panthers

PIKEVILLE -- Junior right-hander Jenny Jackson threw a no-hitter as Charles B. Aycock thumped North Johnston 10-0 in a non-conference battle Tuesday.

Jackson recorded seven strikeouts in a contest called after six innings due to the 10-run rule.

It was the season opener for both teams.

"A great way to start the season," second-year Aycock coach David West said. "We had a great team effort. Everybody got a chance to play."

April Vick emerged the Golden Falcons' offensive leader with three hits, including a triple, and three RBI. Sophomore infielder Kandace Burroughs provided two hits and three RBI.

Jackson delivered two hits, including a double, to go along with an RBI. Brittani Edgerton contributed two hits and an RBI.

Jennifer Williams, Rae Ann Edmondson, Kaitlyn Thomas and Chrissy Setliff also contributed to the win.

Aycock rapped 10 singles, one double and two triples as a team.

The Golden Falcons continue play Friday at West Johnston. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

"That's going to be a good measuring stick for where we are right now," West said.

Havelock shuts

out E. Wayne

HAVELOCK -- Havelock tallied four unearned runs in a 6-0, non-conference decision against Eastern Wayne.

Emily Sasser led the Warrior offense with three hits. Ashley Mewborn contributed a 2-for-3 effort.

Katie Jones endured the pitching loss, surrendering five runs (two earned) on four hits. Ginny Narron threw the final two innings, striking out one and yielding one hit.

Eastern Wayne (0-1) entertains Havelock on Friday.

Rosewood eases

past Hobbton

Rosewood opened its season with a 7-4, non-conference victory against Hobbton on Tuesday afternoon.

Chandra Meadows, Aubrey Reinhard and Jennifer Boren combined for the pitching win. Reinhard had the lone strikeout among the three hurlers.

No offensive stats were available.

The Eagles (1-0) travel to Southern Wayne today.

Chargers claim

win against Rams

SNOW HILL -- Ayden-Grifton took an early lead and rolled up a 10-1 softball victory over Greene Central Tuesday in the season opener for both teams.

The Chargers pushed over three runs in the first to take a lead they would not lose.

Greene Central's only run came in the second.

The Rams (0-1) visit Farmville Central on Friday.

Ayden-Grifton entertains South Central at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Saints fall

in season opener

WILMINGTON -- Southern Wayne opened its season with a 10-0, no-hit loss against Ashley on Tuesday afternoon.

Coach Scott Underhill said that catcher Kristen Beaman "played well defensively behind the plate" and Whitley Thornton played well defensively.

The Saints (0-1) travel to North Lenoir next Tuesday.
