EDWARD L. BARROW

Edward Lindley Barrow, 74, passed away peacefully Sept. 1, 2018, surrounded by his family.
Ed was born Nov. 16, 1943, to the late Edward Earl Barrow and Lois Sugg Barrow.
A native of Greene County, Ed attended Snow Hill High School in the last class to graduate from that school.
After standout baseball and basketball careers, upon the school’s closing, he liked to say his jerseys were retired.
Ed went on to attend East Carolina University, where he earned a degree in accounting.
After working for Carolina Power&Light in Raleigh for 10 years, Ed returned to eastern North Carolina, where he built the accounting firm of Barrow, Parris & Davenport, P.A. For more than 40 years, Ed practiced in public accounting serving individuals, businesses and governmental/nonprofit clients.
Ed was extremely active in his profession and community, including service as past president of the Coastal Plains Chapter of CPAs, past president of the Kinston Rotary and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, former treasurer of the Kinston Arts Council and chairman of the Kinston Parks and Recreation Commission.
He was a member of the Lenoir Memorial Hospital board of trustees from September 1987 to January 1998, and served as chairman from 1992 until the end of his tenure on the board.
He was inducted into the Lenoir Memorial Hospital Hall of Honor, and received the North Carolina Hospital Association Outstanding Trustee Award for his tireless service.
Ed was an active member of Kinston Country Club and Cutter Creek Country Club as well.
In his spare time, Ed enjoyed watching and playing golf with his brother and his friends.He was known to mention the strength and power of the “1943 model” while on the golf course.
Ed loved following his grandchildren’s endeavors in basketball, running, acting, baseball and especially academics.
Ed touched many lives with his kindness, caring and generosity, and he was always willing to lend a helpful hand to those in need. His knowledge and kindness have guided many people.
Ed is survived by his three children, Melissa Culbreth (Jason) of Raleigh, Andy Barrow (Carie) of Greensboro and Randy Barrow (Jenny) of Raleigh, and their mother, Hilda Pate Barrow.
Ed is also survived by his wife, Debbie and her children, Travis Vann and Sherry Vann of Goldsboro; his sister, Patricia Evans (Maurice) of Youngsville; brother, Larry Barrow (Lois) of Farmville; his grandchildren, Adam Barrow, Jonathan Barrow, James Barrow and Jack Barrow; nephews, Michael Miller, Jake Barrow and Bryan Barrow; aunts, Louise S. McLawhorn (James Ray) and Nannie Mae Barrow all of Snow Hill; and uncle, Bailey Barrow of Kinston.
The family would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of the MSICU at UNC Rex Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion shown to their father.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lenoir Hospital Foundation, Kitty Askins Hospice Center or Rex Healthcare Foundation Nursing Excellence Fund.
A visitation will be held at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Westminster United Methodist Church in Kinston, with burial to follow at Rainbow United Methodist Church in Snow Hill.
