Carlton Earl Davis, 80, Myrtle Beach, died peacefully at Brightwater Nursing Facility, Sunday, June 17.

He was born in Goldsboro, N.C., the son of the late Eugenia and John Davis.

Earl had an undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University in agriculture and a Masters in Divinity from Duke University.

He proudly served in the Army National Guard.

He then began his career as a minister in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, and received his clinical pastoral education at Baptist Hospital in Atlanta.

He became a chaplain, working in alcohol and drug rehabilitative care, and then continued to work for the Department of Health and Human Services for the state of Georgia, where he was an instrumental figure in the passage of the first DUI laws.

He semi-retired after 21 years of service, and fostered a love of floral arrangements, working as a florist for 10 years.

He fully retired to Myrtle Beach in 2006.

He was a resident of Covenant Towers Independent Living, and was very involved in its activities, including Bible study and supporting the performing arts.

Earl was married for 28 years to Patricia Davis, with whom he had two lovely children, Carla and Todd.

He will be missed by Carla, Todd, Carla’s husband, Jeff, and their daughter Jordyn, Todd’s children, Daylin, Braxten and Presley, as well as his sister, Virginia Lou Royall; his brother, Gene Davis, his wife, Linda Davi;s and many special nieces and nephews.

Earl was predeceased by his brother, Felton and his wife, Sue Davis, and his brother-in-law Graham Royall.

All who knew Earl were captivated by his fun-loving personality and his understanding of God’s love for everyone.

Earl loved to cook and sing in the choir, but mostly loved to be with his family, of whom he was extraordinarily proud.

The family would like to thank the staff at Covenant Towers, Brightwater Nursing Facility, Homewatch Caregivers and Heartland Hospice for their committed care and important roles in making his journey more comfortable.

The family would like to invite everyone to participate in a celebration of Earl’s life at Covenant Towers this Saturday, June 23, at 2 pm.

The family plans to hold a funeral at Providence United Methodist Church in Goldsboro, N.C., Aug. 5t, at 2:30 p.m. If you are able to attend, please feel free to dress in color to honor the joyful, colorful spirit of our father.
