Tony Ellis Jr., 92, Goldsboro, was promoted to glory Tuesday.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony Ellis Sr. and Ethel Ellis, along with his brother, Billy Ellis, sister, Mary Anderson, and his first wife of 49 years, Neta Pearl Ellis.
Tony was a proud veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II, and was an active member of the Salvation Army serving as a corps sergeant major for 60 years.
He enjoyed collecting antiques, spending time with his family and his chihuahua, Buddy.
A service to celebrate the life of Tony Ellis Jr. will be held Friday at noon in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Family members will greet friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
Tony is survived by his current wife of 24 years, Hazel Ellis; his children, Tex (Mona) Ellis of Sherman, Texas, Julia (Howard) McSwain of Gaffney, S.C., Toni Ann (James) Gardner of Goldsboro, N.C., Renea (Julius) Herring of Dudley, N.C., and Robert (Meredith) Strickland of Shallotte, N.C.; his sister, Della Ruth Ellis of Goldsboro, N.C.; a godson, Ryan Scott (Beth) Strickland; a son-in-law, Randy (Candy Melton) Best of Grantham, N.C.; grandchildren, Toney Ellis, Tex Ellis Jr., Travis Ellis, Candy Cruze, James Gardner, Howard Gardner, Melissa Sauls, Shane Strickland, Paula Harper, Anthony Best, Nathaniel Best, Donnie Strickland, Grayson Cassady, Diana Hirschfeld and Kingsley Strickland; along with numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; and a special extended family member, Dr. Rachel Schultz.
