NYOKA 'JACKIE' SUTTON

Mrs. Nyoka “Jackie” Strickland Sutton, 75, resident of the Brock’s Chapel section near Mount Olive, passed away early Thursday morning, May 17, 2018, at Vidant Duplin Hospital. 

A service to celebrate her life will be Saturday, May 19, at 3 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Emmitt Jones and the Rev. Steve Cayton, followed by a time of visitation. Interment will be Sunday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.

The family will also receive friends at the home of her daughter.

Memorial donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio. 45250. 

Having lived in numerous places due to the military enlistment of her husband, she had enjoyed a life long career of being a hairdresser, and for more than 40 years, she taught beauty culture and cosmetology at Vance-Granville Community College.

Upon the retirement of the couple, they returned to the Mount Olive area, which was home base for the both of them. 

Mrs. Sutton is survived by a daughter, Robin Susan Sutton of Mount Olive; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Sutton Thomas of Raleigh; grandchildren, Matthew Sutton and wife, Jennifer Lee Sutton, of Mount Olive, Clifford John “Baby” Jones and wife, Nina Zelno Jones, of Raleigh and William Shawn Jones of Raleigh; a great-grandchild, Campbell Christian Jones of Raleigh; a brother, Kenneth “Coot” Strickland and wife, Shirley, of Mount Olive; and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Allen Sutton; her husband, Oscar Melvin “Dick” Sutton; her parents, Kenneth Paul Strickland and Estelle Thornton Strickland Wall; and a brother, William Edward Strickland.
