Lonnie Lee Best, 80, Grantham, passed away Monday, May 14, 2018, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Lonnie was born in Wayne County Aug. 27, 1937, to the late Ruby and Annie Elizabeth Best.

He had worked for more than 20 years with Warrick’s Feed Mill at Stevens Mill.

Lonnie was a valued member of Grantham Volunteer Fire Department and Woodmen of the World in Grantham.

Lonnie had a wonderful sense of humor, and never took himself too seriously.

He was a good friend, and had a generous heart.

He provided a good home for his family, and gave all he could to his family and strangers alike.

Lonnie could often be found in Grantham on his golf cart looking a friend to share a story with. He will be missed, but greatly remembered.

A service to celebrate Lonnie’s life will be held Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 11 a.m. in Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Dennis Pollock, the Rev. Terry Hobbs and the Rev. Jim Huskins officiating.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 16, 2018, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home in Grantham.

Lonnie is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Mary Ella Kornegay Best; daughters, France Jones and husband, Speed, and Kathryn Patterson and husband, Larry; brother, William Best; his twin brother, Donnie Best; grandchildren, Amanda Peeden (Roger), Nicole Miller and Heather Joy (Drew); and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Virginia Carol Best, and brother, Carson Best.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534, Grantham Fire Department, 3430 U.S. 13 South, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or Providence United Methodist Church, 202 Providence Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
