EMILY C. JONES

Jan. 10, 1944-March 25, 2018

Mrs. Emily Croom Jones, 74, Maury, died Sunday, March 25, 2018, at Palliative Care Unit of Vidant Medical Center.

A native of Greene County, she was born Jan. 10, 1944, the daughter of Herman G. Croom Sr. and Mattie Edwards Croom.

A 1962 graduate of Greene Central High School, she won a state typing contest and the school bus driver rodeo both her senior year; those accomplishments aided in her securing scholarship money to complete her post-secondary education.

In May of 1965, she graduated from East Carolina University with a degree in business administration, and soon began a teaching career that would span more than 44 years.

During her tenure, Emily taught two years at New Hope School in Goldsboro, 32 years in Greene County schools and nine years at Greenville Christian Academy.

Her greatest passions were serving her Lord as a pianist for many years at Ormondsville Original Free Will Baptist Church, teaching and nurturing children and cherishing every moment spent as a grandmother with her only grandchild, Savannah.

Simply, she was devoted to her Lord, family and friends.

Left to cherish Emily's memory are her husband of 54 years, Julian Jones Jr; daughter, Caroline Jones Cunningham and husband, Jerry, of Walstonburg; granddaughter, Savannah Grace Cunningham, a freshman at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill; sisters-in-law, Angela Barger of Abingdon, Va., and Leigh Ann Croom of Pikeville; brothers-in-law, Joe Lotts of Abingdon, Va., and Mike Shea of Jacksonville; nieces and nephews, David Croom and wife, Beth, of Pikeville, Edward Croom and wife, Phyllis, of Kenly, Kathryn Farrior and husband, Buck, of Pikeville, Julie Amburn and husband, A.J., of Houston, Texas, Lisa Cole and husband, B.B., of Jacksonville, David Hawkins of Jacksonville and George Barger and fianceé, Brittany Pilon of Abingdon, Va.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, Emily was preceded in death by her brother, Herman G. Croom Jr., and sister-in-law, Jean Jones Shea.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Ormondsville Original Free Will Baptist Church. Committal services will follow at 11 a.m. Friday, March 30, at Snow Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening following the service and other times at the Jones residence in Maury.
