NETTIE H. HOLMES

Retired United States Air Force Lt. Col. Nettie Frances Hollis Holmes, 77, peacefully passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, surrounded by her family.
Born in Martin County Sept. 19, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Joe Hollis and Velma Holliday Hollis.
Nettie was a graduate of Pikeville High School, and went on to further her education at Rex School of Nursing in 1961.
Following nursing school, she went to work at Duke Hospital, and later joined the United States Air Force, where she retired as a lieutenant colonel pediatric nurse practitioner after 22 years of service.
Following her Air Force career, she later worked and retired from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
A woman of great faith, Nettie was a member and worshipped at Love Memorial Baptist Church.
She will be remembered as a great caregiver, who enjoyed taking care of others, especially her family.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Love Memorial Baptist Church, followed by a service to celebrate Nettie's life, with the Rev. Richard Tolar officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Nettie is survived by her husband of 44 years, Kenneth Holmes; children, Mark Holmes (Bonnie), Keith Holmes (Terrie) and Michelle McGarry (Bill); sisters, Dawn Summerlin, Melanie Thompson (Larry) and Sandra Gurley (Roland); five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Billie Hollis.
