RAYFORD BARROW

Feb. 9, 1924-Oct.14, 2017

Mr. Rayford "Buck" Barrow, 93, Snow Hill, passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

A native of Greene County, Buck was born Feb. 9, 1924, son of Sam and Nola Barrow. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he began his career as a tobacco farmer and later owned and operated a dump truck.

He was passionate in researching and documenting the Barrow genealogy, and along the way, providing friends and family with his knowledge. He enjoyed attending many of the annual Barrow Genealogy meetings across the USA and providing insight to their Greene County roots. He loved everything historical and enjoyed exploring that history while traveling whenever the opportunity arose. Whether it be building his home with his own hands, being prepared for storms by building an underground tornado shelter, or designing and building a successful "pecan sheller," he always looked for a way to improve the quality of life for his family, using simple common sense and hard work. His biggest hobby however, was his yardwork, taking care of his grass and azaleas until the very end.

In addition to his parents, Buck is preceded in death by brothers, Hodges, Wiley, and Desmond; sisters, Aylese Barrow, Joyce Taylor, and Bertha Mae Head; and son-in-law, Robert Rose.

He leaves behind the love of his life and devoted wife of 71 years, Edna Walston Barrow; daughters, Joan Rose, Edna Hoogewind (Jon), and Audrey Walker; his grandchildren, Angie Childers, April Novak (Scott), Amy Reilly (John), John Walker, Bert Rose (Ramona), Beth Rose, Amy Cecil (Curtis), and Mary Margaret Radford (Daryl); 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Barrow; and sisters, Myrtle Heath, Jean Newsome and Evangeline Naylor. Additionally, he also leaves behind his devoted friend and caregiver, Helen Stocks, who became a member of the family and had a profound impact on the quality of his life.

The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care provided by the staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Also, the family would like to thank his home health aide, Sheryl Elliott, who added a ray of sunshine to his last days. A special thank you to Floyd Hill, Margaret Sutton, Lou Chase and Pastor Mike Parks for their unwavering loyal visits during his illness; he looked forward to and enjoyed every single visit. Thank you to Harold Harper, Dennis Chase and Jason Rouse who supported Buck with their talents, good sense of humor, and love when he needed it the most.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Free Gospel PFWB Church, with Pastor Mike Parks officiating. Interment will immediately follow at the Snow Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday prior to the service beginning at 1:30 p.m. All other times, the family will be at the home of his daughter, Joan Rose, 289 Circle Drive, Pikeville, N.C.

Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be directed to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534 or Free Gospel Church, 145 Free Gospel Road, Snow Hill, N.C., 28580. Online condolences at www.taylor-tyson.com.
