Joel Wayne Howell, 69, passed away suddenly Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at his home in Memphis, Tenn.

The family will receive friends Sunday, April 2, 2017, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service celebrating Wayne’s life at 3 p.m. in the chapel.

Interment will conclude the service in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Wayne was born in Goldsboro, N.C., May 19, 1947, to Lucy Edwards Howell and the late Ralph Howell.

He was a graduate of Goldsboro High School, and had many lasting friendships through the years with his classmates.

Wayne had a long and successful career in marketing and sales in the paperboard industry, including executive positions at Simkins Industries, Mead and most recently for Asia Pulp and Paper, the largest paper company in the world.

Along with his wife, they attended services at Independent Presbyterian Church in Memphis, Tenn.

For many years Wayne was an active leader in Small Group Ministries at St. Barnabas United Methodist Church in Arlington, Texas.

In addition to his mother, Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Sheila Stancil Howell of Memphis, Tenn.; daughters, Jayne Allison Howell of Washington, D.C., and Joanna Howell McClellan and husband, Orion Palmer McClellan, of McClellanville, S.C.; and three grandchildren, Jackson Palmer McClellan, Edward Lee McClellan and Annie Jayne McClellan.

He is also survived by a daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren by marriage, Shay Blackman Sepko and husband, Bart Sepko, and their children, Jackson and John West, of Collierville, Tenn., and a son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren by marriage, Scott Blackman and wife, Jennifer, and their children, Connor, Griffin and Brennan.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Hutchinson Howell of Mount Pleasant, S.C.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the charity of one’s choice or please do a kind act for someone in memory of Wayne.
