MARY CLARK HICKS

Aug. 2, 1924-March 19, 2017

Mary Clark Hicks, 92, died on March 19, 2017, in a dementia care facility in Berkeley, Calif. Mary was born Aug. 2, 1924 in Goldsboro, N.C. She held a BS in chemistry from the N.C. College for Women (now UNC-Greensboro) and an MA from Columbia University Teacher's College. In her nearly 60-year career, Mary worked as a science teacher, a science textbook writer and editor and a psychoanalyst.

She lived in New York City from 1961 to 2013. Mary was a consummate New Yorker with a passion for opera. She was a member of Christ and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Manhattan and she served as a tour guide in Central Park.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, John Elias Faison Hicks and Mary Smith Hicks; her brothers, John Miller Hicks, Walter Smith Hicks and William Lawrence "Red" Hicks and her nephew, William Lawrence "Bill" Hicks.

She is survived by nieces, Barbara Hicks Lee of Oakland, Calif., Susan Hicks Weaver of Kealakekua, Hawaii, Julia Hicks Hudson of Reno, Nev., Josephine Herring Hicks of Charlotte, N.C. and Mary Lawrence Hicks of Berkeley, Calif.; nephews, Steven Stanley Hicks and Daniel David "Pea" Hicks of San Diego, Calif.; one grandniece and five grandnephews.
