THOMAS B. LAIN

Retired United States Coast Guard Cmdr. Thomas B. Lain passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, N.C.

A 3 p.m. funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at Forbis and Dick Pleasant Garden Chapel. Interment will follow at Moriah United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour.

Commander Lain was born in Chicago, Ill., Oct. 13, 1934, to Mureld Louis Lain and Margaret Hilda Lindquist.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Lain, and his parents.

He served in the United States Coast Guard for 27 years, was a lifelong Boy Scout and Boy Scout leader, was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, Order of the Arrow, was the "Belly Flop" champion at Boy Scout camp, was a devout member of Moriah United Methodist Church, was a member of the Gideons, who enjoyed distributing Bibles to the college kids, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his children, Mary Lain Ward, Thomas Benton Lain III (Val), William Louis Lain (Bonnie), Steven Russell Lain (Kathy) and "Clio" the Cat.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Quinn Connolly (Alli), Megan Connolly, Matthew Lain (Maria), Michael Lain (Felicia), Kimberly Babcock (Chris), Kaitlynn Lain, Kristen Lain and Aaron Lain, and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, P.O. 140800, Nashville, Tenn., 37214-0800.

Forbis and Dick Pleasant Garden Chapel is serving the Lain family.
