The Rev. Charles Martin Hackett, 82, passed away on Wednesday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

He is the son of the late Charles Martin and Sara McDaniel Hackett, and husband of June Hackett.

The Rev. Hackett was retired from the United States Air Force and United States Army with 20 years of combined service, and was a retired Methodist minister after 23 years of ministry. While in the service, he received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rufus Butner and the Rev. Adam Seate officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home. Committal services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

In addition to his wife, the Rev. Hackett is survived by his children, Susan Lynn Vanderburg of Burlington, Charles Martin Hackett Jr. and wife, Angie, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Timothy Shawn Hackett and wife, Lisa, of Greenville; a sister, Lindalee S. Mason of Billings, Mont.; a sister-in-law, Priscilla J. Vining of Buzzards Bay, Mass.; an aunt, Doris McDaniel of Somerville, Mass.; grandchildren, Rhian Vanderburg Harris and husband, Christopher, William C. Vanderburg and fiancee, Cassandra, Alexis G. Vanderburg, Morgan E. Hackett, and Anna M. Hackett; and great-grandchildren, Liam Thomas Harris and Myles Jaxson Harris.

In addition to his parents, a brother, Francis E. Vining, preceded him in death.
