Ben “Doodle” Mercer Jr., 72, Goldsboro, N.C., passed away Dec. 2, 2016, at home after a short illness.
He was born in Grantham, N.C., to Ben and Mary Irene (Howell) Mercer.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Johnny Wayne Mercer, Jerry Mercer and Ray Mercer; and a sister Fay Denning.
Ben was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served with the United States Army in Vietnam.
He lived and worked in North and South Carolina his entire life.
He retired in 1993 from Republic Construction.
He is survived by his sons, Richard (Lisa) Mercer of Central Square, N.Y., and Michael Mercer of Syracuse, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Anna, Aaliyah and Richard all of Central Square, N.Y.; a sister, Diane Davis of Goldsboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
The family will be receiving friends for one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Howell Family Cemetery.
