MAXINE WADE BARROW

June 21, 1924-Aug. 29, 2016

Mrs. Maxine Wade Barrow, 92, Goldsboro, passed away peacefully Monday morning, Aug. 29, 2016.

A native of Greene County, she was born June 21, 1924, the second of seven children of Giles Rand and Blanche Sugg Wade.

Following graduation from Snow Hill High School, Maxine married P.L. Barrow. They lived and raised their family in the Arba community until moving to Snow Hill when P.L. became Sheriff of Greene County.

In addition to her parents and husband, Maxine was preceded in death by her siblings, Florine Hardy, Rand W. Wade, Hilda Stadiem and Janet Cunningham.

Music was always very important to Maxine. Her children remember her singing as she moved around the house. She sang solos for many weddings, funerals and church services.

Maxine always enjoyed being a part of the church choir, and she was a longtime member of Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church and its choir.

In later years after her husband's death, she moved to Emerald Isle, where she sang in the choir at Chapel by the Sea, and enjoyed attending the community Bible study there.

After relocating to Goldsboro to be near her daughter, she attended the Precept Bible study classes. She also enjoyed singing in the Chancel Choir of First Presbyterian Church, which she attended for several years. Most recently, she became a member of Crossway Church in Goldsboro.

One of Maxine's fondest memories came when she was a member of a combined Eastern North Carolina High School Choir, which represented the state at the 1940 World's Fair in New York. A highlight of the trip was when the choir stopped in Washington, D.C., to sing for President and Mrs. Roosevelt and the United States senators and their wives at the White House. Additionally, Maxine sang a solo on that occasion.

After her children were in school, Maxine took the Civil Service exam, and went to work in the U.S. Post Office in Snow Hill until her retirement in 1987.

Her surviving family includes her children, Marsha Tucker (Robert) of Goldsboro and Pat L. Barrow (Cindy) of Wallace; grandchildren, Don Taylor (Martha) of Durham, Tiffany Stroud (Ralph) of Goldsboro, Kelly Gilbert (Joel) of Richmond, Brianne Little (Scott) of Washington, D.C., and Lindley Barrow of Raleigh; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her brother, Alvin Wade (Janice) of Cary; sister, Carol Blanche Wainwright (Ralph) of Stantonsburg; two special sisters-in-law, Carol Pippin Wade of Snow Hill and Pearl Barrow of Goldsboro; numerous beloved nieces and nephews; and caregivers, Helen Jones, Janet Janette and Katie Edwards.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service in Snow Hill.

A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leon Grubbs and the Rev. John Randolph officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church Family Life Center.

Interment will be held privately at Snow Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church, 3984 Hull Road, Snow Hill, N.C., 28580, or Crossway Church, P.O. Box 10156, Goldsboro, N.C., 27532.
