ETHEL O. MCPHAIL

Ethel Owens McPhail, longtime resident of Mount Olive, passed away Sunday evening, June 26, at Wayne Memorial Hospital at the age of 96.

Born at Stantonsburg, but raised in Faison, she was a retired school teacher, having taught at the old Mount Olive Elementary and Carver Elementary schools, namely in the third and fourth grades.

She had been a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Olive for at least 75 years, and was its oldest member at the time of her passing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Daniel "Billy" McPhail; her parents, Earl S. and Lida Yelverton Owens; and all her siblings.

Her survivors include her daughter, Billie Carole McPhail of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Gwen McPhail of Mount Olive; five grandchildren and their spouses, Leisha and Cliff Best, Ryan and Kathleen McPhail, Jared and Cindy McPhail, Nikki and Miguel deVarona and Jordan and Crystal McPhail; nine great-grandchildren, Tryston and Bailey Best, Brissa and Oriana deVarona and Abby, Daniel, Hayley, Braeden and Addison McPhail; a sister-in-law, Theria W. McPhail of Goldsboro; and a brother-in-law, Charles Douglas McPhail of Suffolk, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 29, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, with church pastor, Dr. Dennis Atwood, officiating. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

The McPhail family will receive friends in the Christian Life Center at the church during the hour before the service.
