JESSE R. LUMPKIN

Jesse Ray Lumpkin, 87, died early Sunday morning at his residence. Born in Granville County, he was the son of the late Louis and Dora Clark Lumpkin. A veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War, he was an active member of Selah Christian Church, where he sang in the choir. Jesse enjoyed getting together with friends and playing music throughout the community. He was an avid gardener, volunteering many hours as a Master Gardener through the Wayne County Extension Master Gardener Program.

A service to celebrate Jesse's life will be held Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Patrick Muston officiating. Family members will greet friends at the funeral home immediately following the service. A graveside committal service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Lumpkin is survived by his wife, Willa P. Lumpkin; his son, Alan R. Lumpkin and wife, Patsy of Goldsboro; a stepson, Roger Phipps of Charlotte; a stepdaughter, Dolores Phipps of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Joseph Lumpkin and wife, Martha of Hopewell, Va.; grandchildren, Eric Lumpkin, Graisen Barnes, Jacob Phipps, Casey Minor and Samantha Minor; along with several nephews and a niece. He will also be greatly missed by his special feline companions, Gray and Dolly.
