Julia Winstead Bender, 85, Belfast community of Goldsboro, died Thursday, April 21, 2016.
She was the widow of James R. Bender, who died March 12, 2009.
Funeral Saturday 7 p.m. Salem United Methodist Church, followed by a time of visiting and sharing. Interment will be for, and at the convenience of, the family at Wayne Memorial Park.
Mrs. Bender retired from Belks, and then joined her husband, Mr. "B," as they operated Bender's Barn in the Belfast community.
Moving to Fremont, they were instrumental in the development of Daffodil Park.
She was a volunteer with the Salvation Army, United Church Ministries, Belfast Extension Club and Meals-on-Wheels.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Mike Hopper of Goldsboro and Cynthia and Jerry Tucker of Wilson; son, Jim Bender of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Richie Bender, Chris Griffin and his wife, Ashley, Chris Hopper and his wife, Jamie, and Jerri Drae Tucker; great-granddaughters, Skylar Griffin and Tanner Griffin and Caroline, Lexi and Anderson Clucas; and sisters, Joy O'Neal of Kinston and Elsie Kenderick of Raleigh.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Solon and Minnie Jones Winstead of Wake County; sisters, Gretchen Davis and Mary Keil Collins; and brother, Edward Winstead.
Memorials are suggested to Salem United Methodist Church, 2706 Salem Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530-7914.
