Ruby Thornton Strickland, 87, died Tuesday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Born in Sampson County to the late James and Lena Jackson Weeks, and following the death of her mother when she was only 18 months old, she was raised by Ed and Ida Thornton.

Ruby was married to the late George "Bennie" Strickland, and, in addition to her husband, was preceded in death by her sons, Charles and Mike, and two grandsons, Chris Strickland and Reuben Dale Smith.

She worked for the Young Squire until its closure, and then for Boling Chair and Tiny Tot Day Care.

She was a member of Mount Olive Church of God and Mount Olive VFW Post 9959 Auxiliary.

A service to celebrate Ruby's life will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with George Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

Family members will greet friends Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times, will be at the home of Larry and Wanda Strickland, 170 E. Pine Forest Road, Mount Olive.

Ruby is survived by her sons, Melvin Strickland, Larry Strickland and Steve Strickland all of Mount Olive, George Strickland of Goldsboro and James Strickland of Midway, Ga.; her daughters, Diane Smith and Nina Carol Alvarado both of Mount Olive; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
