S.J. MARTIN

Stephen James Martin Jr., known simply as S.J. Martin, lifelong farmer and resident of the Smith Chapel community near Mount Olive, passed away early Wednesday morning, Jan. 20, at his home.
He was a member of Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church, and he enjoyed the simplicity of a farming way of life.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jean Godwin Martin; his parents, Stephen J. and Katie Parker Martin; and his siblings.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Doris Finch Heath Martin of the home; their five children and spouses, Ken and Jennifer Martin of Mount Olive, Kathy M. and Kendall Rickard of Goldsboro, Robin Heath and Wyatt Ellis of Pittsboro, Bobby and Cindy Heath of Mount Olive and Ronnie Heath of Grantham; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jonathan Altman officiating, followed by visitation.
At other times, friends may also call at the home at 111 Jean St., Mount Olive.
Mr. Martin will be buried at Martin-Price Cemetery following a 10 a.m. committal service Friday, Jan. 22.
