DEBORAH BARSAN

May 1, 1952-Dec. 22, 2015

Deborah "Debbie" Ellen Barsan, 63, passed away unexpectedly Dec. 22, 2015, at her home in Goldsboro, N.C.

Debbie was born May 1, 1952, in Akron, Ohio.

Debbie was first and foremost a wonderful mother, who spared nothing for her children, Jordan and Blake. As a single mother, she went above and beyond her duties as a parent. She never went a day without putting her sons first, providing support for them to grow and succeed in life.

After receiving her bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University in 1976, she continued there to receive her D.D.S. from the College of Dentistry in 1979.

She practiced dentistry for more than 30 years.

After graduating from dental school, she practiced with her father and two brothers, Bob and Dave, in Akron until she joined the Air Force in 1982. She served for three years, and eventually moved to Crete, Greece, with her husband at the time in 1988.

While in Greece, she was in charge of the Red Cross program at the U.S. military base.

She moved to North Carolina in 1989, and she eventually went on to head her own private dental practice there. As a family dentist, Debbie brought the same commitment to her patients that she provided as a mother to her children. She would come in late at night to work around her patients' schedules, and provided free dental care to patients facing financial hardships.

She retired in 2012.

Back at Revere High School in Richfield, Ohio, Debbie was an accomplished athlete and a vocal and active pioneer of women's sports. She advocated for additional athletic offerings for female classmates.

Throughout her life, Debbie had a love of the outdoors, animals and tending to her flower and vegetable garden. She gained her green thumb from her twin brother, David, with whom she shared a special lifelong bond, being the youngest siblings in a large family.

In addition to her two sons and her twin brother, David, Debbie is survived by her mother, Letitia; three older brothers, Bob, Bill and Rick; many loving relatives; and countless friends.

A private service took place Saturday, Jan. 2, in Akron, Ohio.

If you would like to make a donation in Debbie's name, please donate to The Breathe Network (http://www.thebreathenetwork.org/donate) or any women's issues charity of your choosing.

A local gathering is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 8.
