JAMES DURWOOD STRICKLAND

Sept. 24, 1933-Dec. 22, 2015

James Durwood Strickland, 82, Warsaw, passed away peacefully after a brief illness
Dec. 22, 2015.

He was born Sept. 24, 1933, in Erwin, N.C., to James Wilbert and Pearl Jackson Strickland, who preceded him in death.

He was married 62 years to Doris Oldham Strickland, originally of Erwin.

They have two daughters, Donna Lynn with husband, Ray Johnson, of Kenansville and Della Kay, along with husband, Wayne Jones, of Warsaw.

He dearly loved his three grandchildren, Stamper, Parker and Dory Jones.

Additionally, two brothers, Edward Jackson of Smithfield, along with Larry and wife, Joan Strickland, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., survive Durwood.

He was a longtime member of Warsaw United Methodist Church. One of his many favorite church functions was a covered dish meal with a particular interest in the deserts table.

Durwood served his community through Warsaw Lions Club, Woodmen of the World and as past member of Warsaw Jaycees.

He dedicated his adult working life to the Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Co. of Tarboro, N.C., serving more than 30 years as area supervisor in Duplin County and surrounding areas before retirement. Durwood was known as a company man with a keen eye for customer service, and thought fondly of the staff he managed.

A memorial service will be held in Warsaw United Methodist Church celebrating Durwood's life Sunday Dec. 27, 2015, at 3 p.m.

Family visitation will be held in the fellowship hall from 2 to 3 p.m. Friends and family can also visit the Strickland home through Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Warsaw United Methodist Church, 107 W. Plank St., Warsaw, N.C., 28398, or your favorite charity.
