Edith Bruton Ward Thompson, 89, Wilmington, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center.

Born Sept. 25, 1926, at home in Moore County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Daniel Davis Bruton Sr. and Lydia Alice Brown Bruton.

She was raised in Chadbourn, N.C., and graduated from Greensboro College with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, and later attended Bowman Gray School of Medicine for x-ray technology.

She was employed as an x-ray technician, but most of her life was dedicated to her family, who meant so much to her.

She is remembered for her infectious laugh, kindness to people and her zest for life and the joy in it.

She was a prolific golfer, and enjoyed her time spent at Sleepy Creek in Dudley, N.C., where many memories and special times were made.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Potter Ward; her second husband, William Berry Thompson; and two brothers, John McIver Bruton and Daniel Davis Bruton Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Ward Wahnefried of Wilmington; a grandson, Matthew B. Wahnefried of Wilmington; a granddaughter, Rachel E. Wahnefried of Illinois; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at Harbor United Methodist Church, 4853 Masonboro Loop Road, Wilmington, N.C., 28409. Interment will be at Willowdale Cemetery in Goldsboro at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Edith's name to the building fund at Harbor United Methodist Church, 4853 Masonboro Loop Road, Wilmington, N.C., 28409, or St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
