ELWOOD "WOODY" HUDSON

ELWOOD 'WOODY' HUDSON

Died Oct. 6, 2015

A true southern Christian gentleman with a wonderful sense of humor, Elwood "Woody" Hudson died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 6, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center due to complications of cancer. He was 87. His homegoing was peaceful, and he was surrounded by his family.

He was the son of the late George Washington Hudson and Mamie Dudley Hudson.

One of 12 siblings, he developed his work ethic growing up on the family farm in Turkey, N.C.

During World War II, he served the United States Army on the island of Tinian.

One who had a great interest in current events and was always up for a debate, he studied political science at North Carolina State University.

He was a charter member of Pineview Baptist Church, and served in many capacities, including deacon, choir member and Sunday school teacher. He was also the chairman of the committees that oversaw the building of the fellowship hall and the paving of the parking lot.

Owner and operator of Hudson Insurance Agency, he was first licensed in 1956. He loved providing his customers with "Golden Rule service." He refused to retire, and was working at his office within weeks of his passing.

He was a family man with a large family. He thoroughly enjoyed annual "family beach week" at San Kat in Emerald Isle, and Hudson family reunions in Turkey.

He took many trips with various family members to Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Florida and bus tours of the east coast.

The family cat, "Miss Kitty," was particularly fond of him. Her spot was on the floor beside his recliner until he retired for the evening when she would lay at his bedside. Coincidentally, she passed just days before he did.

Visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. at Pineview Baptist Church fellowship hall.

A celebration of his life will be Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at Pineview Baptist Church, with retired pastor James E. Womble, the Rev James Medlin and the Rev Mike Willard officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park immediately following the service.

He was blessed to find great love twice in his lifetime -- his wife, Susan "Sue" Bryant Dilley Hudson, and his late wife and mother of his children, Claudia Carlton Hudson.

In addition to his wife Susan, he is survived by his sister, Norma H. West of Clinton; brother, David Hudson of Turkey; daughters and sons-in-law; Sherry and Fleet Woodley of Raleigh, Lisa and Dan Storey of Kill Devil Hills and Melinda and Chris Creech of Clayton; sons and daughters-in-law, Woody and Sherri Hudson of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and George and Lori Hudson of Wendell; stepson and wife, Harold Glenn and Gloria Dilley of Windsor; stepdaughter and husband, Shari and Danny Davis of Stantonsburg; grandchildren, Jeremy Fleming, Caleb Hudson, Jessica Creech, Ashley Hudson, Olivia Creech and Alyssa Creech; stepgrandchildren, Timmy Perry, Ashley Dilley, Trey Dilley and Cary Davis; stepgreat-grandchild, Kingston Perry; numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved and longtime employee, Tracey Branson of Goldsboro.

A special thank you goes out to Community Hospice Nurse Karen Earnest for her tender, loving care, and to the very kind staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, N.C., 27361.
