REV. JOHNNIE C. SHERROD

The Rev. Johnnie Carlton Sherrod, 90, 802 S. Vance St., Fremont, passed away peacefully at home Monday, Sept. 21, 2015.
Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Arthur Dobbs Sherrod and Effie Diggs Sherrod.
Funeral service will be Saturday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. at Bear Creek Association Headquarters, 1800 S. Slocumb St., Goldsboro, with moderator Harold Warren presiding and former moderator the Rev. Dr. Michael A. Johnson as eulogist. Burial will be in Sherrod Family Cemetery near Stantonsburg.
Rev. Sherrod served his country in the United States Army as an aircraft mechanic. He was a World War II veteran.
After his tour of duty, he attended Veterans Trade School, studying brick masonry and auto mechanics.
He became a very skilled brick mason, and worked in this career for 18 years.
In 1967, he was employed by the Wayne County Board of Education, and took his expertise into the classroom at New Hope High School for one year and Eastern Wayne Senior High School for 21 years, until his retirement in 1989.
Rev. Sherrod helped shape the lives of many students at Eastern Wayne.
Rev. Sherrod first pastored Vaughn Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Elm City, N.C. He was pastor of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Youngsville, N.C., 33 years and Hooks Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Pikeville 34 years.
He was a former 2nd vice moderator of Bear Creek Association.
He was a recipient of the "Rural Pastor of the Year Award" given by the association and the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.
A prominent member of the community, he served on the town of Fremont planning board, Wayne County Advisory Council for nursing homes, advisory board of the Heritage Bank in Fremont and chaplain of the Wayne County Chapter of North Carolina Retired School Personnel.
He was a member of NEA-NCAE and Norwayne Alumni and Friends Inc.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Sherrod was preceded in death by his first wife, Beatrice Artis Sherrod; his oldest daughter, Gwendolyn S. Winston; brothers, Edgar, Reginald, Royal, Selbery and Kemmy Sherrod; and sister, Hula S. Exum Cherry.
He leaves precious memories to his wife, Hattie Jones Sherrod of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Judy S. Green and husband, Howard, of Fremont and Nona S. Fuller, with whom he lived; one brother, Herbert D. Sherrod of Stantonsburg; one sister, Blanche S. Horne of Goldsboro; a son-in-law, William Winston of Stantonsburg; 10 grandchildren, Patricia Winston of Elizabeth, N.J., Aloha Artis of Fremont, Tommy Artis of Atlanta, Ga., Ronny Artis of Pensacola, Fla., Terry Fuller and wife, Kimberly, of Vauxhall, N.J., Maurice Winston of Bronx, N.Y., Tim Fuller of Las Vegas, Nev., Dr. Tamara Fuller-Eddins and husband, Dr. Paul Eddins, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Reginald Artis of Fremont and the Rev. Dr. Taijuan Fuller and wife, Torica, of Fayetteville, N.C.; three stepchildren, Terry Jones and wife, Shelley, of Huntsville, Ala., Ralphael Jones and wife, Cindy, of Woodbridge, Va., and Cassandra Skinner and husband, Rapheal, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 11 stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; 15 nieces; 15 nephews; a goddaughter, Constance Dickerson of Pikeville; loving cousins; and many dear friends.
Visitation will be Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., Goldsboro, N.C. The family will receive friends at Hooks Grove Church in Pikeville, N.C., from 6 to 7:30 p.m. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence, where it will assemble for the procession.
