MCGEE SMITH

Nov. 15, 1929 - March 8, 2015

James McGee "Gee Boy" Smith, 85, of Goldsboro, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2015, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

McGee was born Nov. 15, 1929, in Wayne County, son of the late James Parks "Jim" Smith and Mabel Smith.

McGee was preceded in death by his son, Ben McGee Smith.

McGee personified a "southern gentleman."

He lived to serve his Lord, his family and his community.

He served his Lord through Hood Swamp Friends Meeting, where he took great pride in teaching Sunday school.

A community leader and servant, McGee was always willing to help those in his community.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army.

McGee was adored by his family, for whom he was a source of joy and strength, but also by countless others, all of whom were struck by his quiet generosity, along with his kind and unassuming intelligence.

He cherished his wife and was a role model to his family. McGee loved the land and the life of the farmer.

A service to celebrate and honor McGee's life will be held Thursday, March 12, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Rouse Funeral Home with the Rev. George Lee and the Rev. Mark Thomas officiating.

Interment will follow at the Smith family cemetery.

McGee is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mabel Herring Smith; daughter, Beth Smith Gurley and husband, Carlos; three grandchildren, Ryan Boseman and wife, Darla, Allison Burch and Gracelyn Gurley; great-granddaughter, Savannah Boseman; sister, Shirley Graham; brother, J.P. Smith Jr.; and longtime farming friend, Bud "Knotty" Smith.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home.
