Died Feb. 23, 2015

James Pete Uzzell, 70, peacefully went to be with his heavenly father while surrounded by his loving family at home Monday, Feb. 23, 2015.

J.P., as he was known to most, was the son of the late Pete and Dora Kornegay Uzzell.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Cleveland, Emmitt, Willie and Eddie B. Uzzell, and his sister, Rosa Lee Williams.

J.P. leaves his loving and precious memories to his wife, Melba Smith Uzzell; a son, Kenyatta (Kahni) Uzzell of South Riding, Va.; a daughter, Dr. Kamala (Adrian) Uzzell-Jones of Durham; two grandchildren, Kamila and Kaleb Uzzell of South Riding, Va.; a brother, Jesse (Ernestine) Uzzell of Durham; a sister, Annie Lois Croom of Goldsboro; three sisters-in-law, Doris Smith Thompson of Mitchellville, Md., Shirley Smith Suggs of Goldsboro and Martha Smith of Durham; two brothers-in-law, Clarence Smith of Goldsboro and Earl (Lillian) Smith Jr. of Lanham, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

J.P. was a member of Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities to include chairman of the trustee board and member of the usher board, audio-visual ministry, Tuesday morning Bible study and Laymen's League.

He served in the United States Air Force, and retired from the United States Army National Guard. He proudly served in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.

J.P. graduated from Harris Barber College and Shaw University.

He was an airman, soldier, barber and educator, and he had a passion for serving children with special needs.

His last retirement was from Howell's Childcare Center at Walnut Creek.

An inspirational wake will be held Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. at Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1065 Tommy's Road, Goldsboro, N.C.

The family will greet friends during a reception in the church fellowship hall from 6:45 to 8 p.m.

The celebration of life and legacy will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at noon at Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Burial with full military honors will be in Wayne Memorial Park on U.S. 117 South, followed by a repast in the church fellowship hall.

The family will receive friends during other times at the home, 1848 Tommy's Road, Goldsboro, N.C.
