GEORGE A. FULGHUM
Sept. 8, 1969-Feb. 24, 2015
George Allen Fulghum, 45, lifelong Mount Olive resident, passed into the presence of his heavenly father Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, while being so lovingly and tenderly cared for by the medical angels at Duke University Medical Center.
Services to celebrate his life, his faith and his goodness will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive Presbyterian Church (corner of South Breazeale and North Main streets), with pastor Steve Wicks officiating, along with words of reflection by Mount Olive interim chief of police Tommy Brown.
Visitation will follow the service in the church educational and fellowship building.
George will be laid to rest in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive Sunday, March 1, following a 3 p.m. committal service.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial gifts for the betterment of mankind by making contributions to Mount Olive Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 158, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365, or the P.R. Tisch Brain Tumor Center, Duke University Hospital, DUMC Box 3624, Durham, N.C., 27710.
George, an avid boater and water sportsman who enjoyed his weekend get-away at Bonaparte Retreat at Calabash, had a passion for cooking, and was always eager in giving others food, whether cooked or uncooked.
Instrumental in the founding of the Mount Olive community garden, complete with its chickens "on the ground," he was very attentive to the garden's upkeep.
A member of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church, it was there that he served as an elder, and was on various committees.
He was a commissioner for the town of Mount Olive, and was the board's mayor pro-tempore.
A concrete contractor, having learned the trade from his father, he owned and operated Concrete Specialties in Mount Olive.
George had graduated from Southern Wayne High School, had attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and North Carolina State University, and had completed the marine technical program.
George was a very jovial guy, always sought good, clean fun, and while we all know he was a large guy, his heart was way much larger than he was. His positive attitude and his approach to life and living is something that we can all strive to emulate.
George is survived by a large network of family and friends and a community that he loved, which loved him in return -- his wife, Lynne Johnson Fulghum and their daughter, Georgia Lynne Fulghum of the home; his mother, Donna Waller Fulghum of Mount Olive; paternal grandmother, Doris Jernigan Ellis of Mount Olive; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jody and Emily Fulghum of Durham and Henry and Amy Fulghum of Mount Olive; his parents-in-law, Eric and Gloria Johnson of Goldsboro; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Michelle J. and John Braxton of Fuquay-Varina and Sheri J. and Curtis Russell of Four Oaks; and Georgia's eight special cousins, Grant, Will, David Allen, Oscar, Thomas, Lilly, Katie and Waverly.
Loved ones who have preceded George in death include his father, David Edward Fulghum, and those grandparents that George knew and loved so well, Jessie Rose Waller-Jones and Stephen Allen Waller.
Indeed, the world and community are much better because of George Fulghum, his presence, insight and worthy contributions.
