JAMES HUNTER MERCER
March 21, 1941-Oct. 22, 2014
James Hunter Mercer, after years of illness, went to be with his Lord and savior Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, surrounded by his family and friends.
James was born in Lenoir County March 21, 1941, to the late James Henry and Annie Glenn Jones Mercer.
He was a longtime truck and bus driver, as well as the owner and operator of JHM Leasing.
James was the founder and the bass singer of the gospel group, The Foundations Quartet, and was a member of Pleasant Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Pleasant Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church, followed by a service celebrating James' life at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary, with pastor Barry Stallings and the Rev. Joe Gerald officiating. Interment will follow in Pikeville Cemetery.
James is survived by his wife of 52 years, Connie Coombs Mercer; children, Neil and Melinda Mercer of Goldsboro, Gina and Jeff Strickland of Mount Olive, Sheila and Richard Lewis of Pikeville, Todd and Beverly Wright of Pikeville and Chris Brown of Nashville, Tenn.; his siblings, Ann and Ronnie Lawrence of Ayer, Mass., and Horace and Joyce Mercer of Kinston; 15 grandchildren; and many special adopted grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
