Died Aug. 19, 2014

Benjamin Earl Herring, 88, Goldsboro, died early Tuesday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

He was the son of the late Louis Benjamin and Estelle Exum Herring of Goldsboro.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service celebrating Earl's life at 7 p.m. in the chapel, with the Rev. Robert Bandy officiating. Interment will be Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at 10 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

Earl was a lifelong member of Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church, and served on the administrative board as chairman. He also served as chairman of various other committees. He loved serving the Lord by working at the church.

Earl was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Navy. A special tribute for him was his sons taking him to see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Earl was a farmer, and worked with the United States Department of Agriculture in the county and state before going into construction work.

He earned his Real Estate Broker License in 1974.

Earl is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Marie Outland Herring; two sons, Benny and Brian Herring; and a sister, Amy Daughtry.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, June Marie; an infant son, Robert Lyn; a sister, Sara Gwaltney; and by his brothers, Jack, Bruce, Kenneth "Tom" and Paul Herring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Daniels Memorial United Methodist Church, 2802 E. Ash St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
