HAVEN HERMAN BOWMAN

June 7, 1925-March 27, 2014

Mr. Haven Herman Bowman, 88, Old Wilkesboro Road Extension, Taylorsville, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Bowman was born June 7, 1925, in Alexander County to the late Jason Howard "Jay" Bowman and Ora Deal Bowman.

Mr. Bowman served as a shipfitter second class in the United States Navy aboard the USS Runels in the Pacific Theater in World War II. Sept. 2, 1945, he stood on the deck of the Runels and witnessed the surrender of Japan.

At home in Taylorsville, Mr. Bowman worked for 48 years as store manager at Steele Rulane Gas Service.

Mr. Bowman was a member of Friendship Lutheran Church, and a charter member of Sugar Loaf Volunteer Fire Department and Alexander County YMCA.

As a lifetime member of Taylorsville Lions Club, Mr. Bowman received more than 2,000 eye wills -- a state record -- for the North Carolina Eye and Tissue Bank.

In 1998, Gov. Jim Hunt presented Mr. Bowman with the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.

Including his parents, Mr. Bowman was preceded in death by two brothers, Marshall Bowman and Jasper Bowman; a sister, Mazelle Bowman; and a son-in-law, Charles Smith.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 63 years, Alice Goble Bowman; two daughters, Jane Bowman Walston and husband, John, of Goldsboro and Dianne Bowman Smith of Greensboro; two grandsons, John Turner Walston and wife, Corrie, of Durham and Jason Bowman Walston of Los Angeles; a sister, Novella Bowman Fox of Taylorsville; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to Alma James, a dedicated caregiver for three years, and the staffs at Trinity Village and the Pavilion at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

The funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at Adams Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Phil Thorsen will officiate. Burial will follow in Taylorsville City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. prior to the service at Adams Funeral Home.

Pallbearers include Turner Walston, Jason Walston, Steve Sigmon, Wayne Kerley, Mark Watters, Harlan Bowman, Leon Bowman and Steve Fox. Kaleb Watters and Zachary Watters are honorary pallbearers.
