LUDIA PEARL PEELE BURDEN

Ludia Pearl Peele was born Aug. 5, 1944, in Williamston, N.C., to Mrs. Isolene Peele and the late Joe Lester Peele. She passed away Feb. 15, 2014.

She will be laid to rest Saturday, Feb. 22, at Goldsboro-Raleigh District Assembly at 211 W. Hooks River Road, at noon.

There will be a viewing at Rhodes Funeral Home on Wayne Memorial Drive Feb. 21 from 1 to 5 p.m., and a wake at Best Grove Missonary Baptist Church at 1065 Tommy's Road at 6 p.m.

In 1962, she graduated from East End High School as valedictorian of her class, and attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.

She enrolled at the Kate B. Reynolds School of Nursing at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C., and received her Associate Degree as a registered nurse in 1966.

Ludia was employed by Wayne Memorial Hospital, O'Berry Center, where she served as staff nurse in the Crippled Children's Unit and Cherry Hospital as charge nurse and staff instructor in staff development.

While employed at Cherry, she pursued her bachelor's degree in nursing from East Carolina University and attained this degree in 1974.

In 1980, Ludia was hired by Wayne Community College as a nursing instructor of the registered and practical nurse curricula.

While there, she again attended East Carolina University in pursuit of her master's degree in adult education, which was received in 1992.

She also faithfully worked part-time at Britthaven Nursing Home when called upon.

In 2002, she retired after giving 36 years of service, but continued to teach and worked clinically part-time.

Ludia was an active and devoted member of St. Joseph Free Will Baptist Church, where she served on the mother board, and led countless projects and programs over the years.

She was the president and a longtime active member of the Political Awareness PAC of Wayne County, and played an instrumental role in the election of Wayne County's first African American Commissioner, Mr. Sherman Best.

Ludia loved her sorority, and was a member of Zeta Chi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Her Zeta legacy includes numerous pageants, sponsorships, successes and leadingannual Z-Hope (Helping Other People Excel).

Ludia also loved to plan and attend her family reunions.

Nothing trumped the love that she had for her family. This love was especially apparent for her beloved mother, Ms. Isolene Peele, whom she adored.

Ludia was preceded in death by her father, Mr. Joe Lester Peele.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her mother, Mrs. Isolene Peele of Williamston, N.C; her husband, Mr. Leon Burden of the home; her son, Mr. Jeffrey Leon Burden of the home; her daughter, Ms. Aisha Towana Liferidge of Washington, D.C.; four brothers, Joe Lester Peele Jr. (Marie) of Columbus, Ohio, Eddie Peele of Williamston, N.C., Ronnie Peele (Cynthia) of Robersonville, N.C., and John William Peele (Toni) of Circleville, Ohio.; two sisters, Alice Slade (Jimmie) of Robersonville, N.C., and Mary Isolene Peele of Durham, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, Terry Burden (Vernita) of Goldsboro, N.C., and Thurman Burden (Nancy) of Goldsboro, N.C.; four sisters-in-law, Edna Davis of Goldsboro, N.C., Dorothy Best (Sherman) of Goldsboro, N.C., Ernestine Winfield (Richard) of Chesapeake, Va., Evonne Crumby (Haywood) of Georgia and Patricia Ann Sims of Goldsboro, N.C.; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
