MOUNT OLIVE -- Luby H. Byrd Jr., 76, known to some as "L.H.," Beautancus community near Mount Olive, passed away early Sunday morning, Feb. 9, 2014, at his home.
His life will be celebrated at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in the chapel of Tyndall Funeral Home, and will be officiated by the Rev. Johnny Sasser, after which his family will receive friends.
Mr. Byrd was one of the organizers and builders of the Beautancus Community Club Pond, a place very dear to his heart.
He was an avid fisherman, and perhaps is best known for his devotion and enthusiastic attitude as an educator in the Duplin County Schools for more than 30 years, particularly as principal of North Duplin Elementary, from which he retired.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Casey Byrd; his parents, Luby H. and Geneva Gentry Byrd; and only brother, Charles "Teeny" Byrd.
Survivors include a daughter, Kelly Byrd of the home, and a son, Craig Byrd and wife, Beth, of Goldsboro.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial gifts be made to Beautancus Sportsman Club, c/o Lynn F. Outlaw, 532 Pettifoot Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.
