Mr. James "Jimmy" Cox Sr., 88, Goldsboro, N.C., departed his earthly life Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro, N.C.

James was born in Quincy, Fla., June 7, 1925, to the late Mr. Pete Cox and Mrs. Ada Robinson Cox, formerly of Quincy, Fla.

After completing his education in the public schools of Quincy, Fla., he enlisted into the military.

Mr. Cox served his country in the United States Army during World War II. While on active duty, he was awarded the following commendations: World War II Victory Medal, the United States Army Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He was also authorized two overseas bars while in combat serving in France.

After serving in the military, he relocated to Patterson, N.J., where he met and married Mrs. Irene Lewis Cox (daughter of Jacob and Polly Lewis of Pikeville, N.C).

They were married for more than 56 years. To this union two children were born.

After retiring as a machinist, they relocated to Goldsboro, N.C.

Mr. James Cox Sr. was preceded in death by his son, Mr. James Cox Jr.

Mr. Cox leaves to cherish his loving and precious memories to his wife, Mrs. Irene Lewis Cox; two daughters, Shirley (David) Marshall of West Orange, N.J., and Jacqueline (Earl "Butch") Lewis-Greer of Columbus, Ohio; his brother, Robert Cox of Greenbelt, Md.; his sister, Irene Albritton of Quincy, Fla.; two grandchildren, Lyndsey Greer and Zuri (Sheila) Greer all of Columbus, Ohio; special niece and nephew, eldress Doris Lewis and husband, Melvin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A public viewing will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at McIntyre Funeral Home, 900 S. George St., Goldsboro, N.C., from noon to 1 p.m., with the family present to receive other family members and friends.

Immediately following the viewing, the funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Pastor Janet Lewis Gibson officiating.

Interment will follow in Christopher Coley Cemetery, 2669 Pikeville-Princeton Road, Pikeville, N.C.

At other times, the family will receive friends and other family members at the residence in Goldsboro, N.C.

The family and friends will assemble an hour prior at 10:50 a.m., at the residence in preparation for the funeral procession.

Flowers may be sent to McIntyre Funeral Home, 900 S. George St., Goldsboro, N.C., beginning Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
