DR. ARTHUR SAUNDERS CHESSON JR.

GREENVILLE -- Dr. Arthur Saunders Chesson, Jr., 89, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. in Wrightsville United Methodist Church in Wrightsville Beach, N.C. The Rev. Bob Bauman and the Rev. P.D. Midgett will officiate.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Dr. Chesson, a native of Wilson County, N.C., was a Navy pilot during World War II.

He graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1954, and served as health director in Goldsboro for five years.

He then opened a private practice in pediatrics in Goldsboro, treating many children over the years.

While In Goldsboro, he was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

Dr. Chesson relocated to Wilmington, N.C., where he was employed with the Developmental Evaluation Center (DEC) until his retirement.

A member of Wrightsville United Methodist Church, he was instrumental in developing the pre-school program there.

He was an avid supporter of Boy Scouts, and had served as assistant scout master.

He was a member of the Power Squadron, an organization that promotes safe boating.

Dr. and Mrs. Chesson moved to Greenville in 2012 to be near the family.

He is survived by his wife, Gay Woodard Chesson; a daughter, Beth Chesson Tew of Farmville, N.C.; a son, Arthur S. Chesson III, and wife, Deborah, of Wilmington, N.C.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Tew Witte and husband, Mathiew, of Charlotte, N.C., Kevin Saunders Chesson and wife, Amy, of Greenville, N.C., and William Ryan Chesson of Greenville, N.C.; great grandchild, Benjamin Mathiew Witte of Charlotte, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.
